This year, we are excited to announce that we will be supporting the UPMC Children’s Down Syndrome Center (DSC). This center provides a comprehensive care model for individuals with Down syndrome, ranging from pre-natal diagnoses through adulthood. In more than 35 years of operation, the Center provides compassionate care for more than 1,000 individuals at six locations throughout Western PA. The DSC, through the dedicated work of two coordinators and a nurse, acts as a safety net for caregiver’s questions between appointments and by connecting families to community resources to help care for their loved one. Unfortunately, insurance reimbursement for patients with Down syndrome is inadequate when it comes to their care. In fact, insurance only covers 15 minutes of a patient’s interaction with the staff of the DSC when patients typically need 60 minutes or more. Now operated by a team of 11 professionals, the Down Syndrome Center continues to thrive because of generous support provided by grateful families, foundations and members of our community.

Our 8th year for Chip In For Children’s and we are thrilled to announce that $11,300 is on its way to the Patient Experience Fund for the Emergency Department at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh!

Sustained growth of this fund is crucial to addressing the hospital’s pressing needs, enabling staff to tackle both large and small challenges. This will directly enhance the experience of the many families who visit the emergency department daily. Many of you have personally experienced the ER, which is why we’ve chosen to focus on it this year. Your generosity is truly making a significant difference!

The ED has experienced a nearly 30% increase in patient volume in the last two years, leading to challenges for providers and longer wait times. To improve the experience for patients and families, the ED aims to enhance the waiting room with distraction artwork, books, phone charging stations, and other essentials. The support and generosity of this year’s outing will directly help address the hospital’s growing needs and improve the experience for families visiting the ED daily.
