How Bauhaus Redefined What Design Could Do for Society 04/23/2019

How Bauhaus Redefined What Design Could Do for Society A century after its founding, the German school of art and architecture remains one of the most transcendent — and frustrating — movements of the Modernist age.

This photo gives me warm fuzzy feelings. I love the fact that the statue of Richard Caliguiri is standing tall amongst the crowd. It was my first architectural assignment to design the placement of the statue, literally the first week upon moving to the city I now call home. After some research, I understood that the deceased mayor was a person of his citizens, loved hanging out in front of the City County Building, having conversation with the people. The acceptance of this solution was very cautious. I was challenged to come up with other alternative solutions. So glad the decision makers chose my first sketch! It is always a comforting feeling to see public projects evolved. It only reveals through the test of time. I like to see my lines on paper turning out after decades to be engaging, morphing and maturing. It is like giving birth to a child, we do our best to raise the child. When the child becomes an adult, we can only hope that (s)he will mature to be a positively engaging adult.

As an intern in this building facing the fabulous Rhine River, the education started with making stinky prints and washing everyone’s rapidograghs. Peaking thru the entrance, I saw myself as a young high school graduates, eager to absolve every details in architectural trade, wondering what my future as an architect would hold. It was emotional, with deep gratitude to all the senior architects who helped me become an architect!

Some of the fun drawings in the past. Must do more of these luxurious activities. I traded this therapeutic treat with music, it is now difficult to squeeze in other good stuffs. These days, I started my morning getting excited to dive into solving problems and to continue the development of my project, until bedtime. It is a good addiction.

Gottfried Bohm was also a sculptor. So glad that he is still around and admired.

Bathroom Renovation 08/04/2016

A dear friend asked for my assistence in renovating an old bathroom in a large house without too much intervention. This means keeping all the walls around the bathroom, and the plumbing locations. She is a western European and I was educated in western Europe, - we have a common knack of "clean lines" and "minimalism". I find the process very rewarding!
