Gavin Benjamin:
In The Air Tonight

This new series takes a more pop art approach than some of the artist’s prior work – bright colors and simple silhouettes, tastefully adorned with crystals. It reflects his nostalgia for New York City in the 90’s – an era gone by.

westmorelandmuseum New Acquisition Alert! Gavin Benjamin’s “Past Imperfect #1” (2023) is the newest work in the Museum’s permanent collection. It joins three other works by the artist that were on view at The Westmoreland in 2022–2023.

You can see “Past Imperfect #1” on view at the Museum today and tomorrow (May 30 & 31) in the special pop-up exhibition “Gavin Benjamin: Gilded Glamour.”

A multidisciplinary artist, merges photography, painting, and design to explore questions of identity, race, luxury, and belonging. Drawing inspiration from art history, fashion, and pop culture, his richly layered portraits challenge how beauty and power are portrayed in contemporary society.

EXHIBIT ANNOUNCEMENT

Gavin Benjamin: In The Air Tonight
Artist Reception
June 6, 5-8pm

This series of mixed-media collages is rooted in observation — in the art of people watching and the fleeting theater of public life. The works explore the tension between visibility and anonymity, individuality and performance, memory and mythmaking. The 1990s now feel like the threshold between two worlds: the final moment before technology fundamentally altered our relationship to privacy, identity, and self-expression. Before the omnipresence of cell phones, cameras, and social media, there existed a rare freedom — the ability to move through the world unrecorded, to invent oneself continuously and without scrutiny.

Blending autobiography with pop culture, nightlife, politics, and collective memory, these works preserve fragments of a disappearing New York City. They are layered portraits of a city, a generation, and a state of mind that can never fully exist again.
