One of the scariest moments of my life happened at this beach… My friend and I arrived at the beautiful Reynisfjara Beach in Iceland. We were talking and so excited to be there that we didn’t notice any of the signs and just ran down to enjoy it. The waves were staying pretty low on shore so we didn’t think anything of it. Yes the waves were huge, but we never expected this to happen. Have you heard of sneaker waves? This is when smaller waves combine to create a massive one. At this beach, when the water hits the rock formation, it shoots the waves up at such a speed that you cannot outrun it if you are too close. I was that person who was too close. The wave was so big when it hit me, it swept me off my feet. I was completely submerged under the water. It was pulling me back into the ocean and I could not stand up to get out of it. Eventually, it died down and I was able to stand and run to safety. If it had taken me all the down into the ocean, I would have never made it out alive because of how strong the current was. This beach has claimed many lives over the years so this is a WARNING to you. Pay attention to signs. Never get close to the shoreline on Reynisfjara Beach. And never turn your back to the ocean here. ⚠️ 10/02/2022
