Ilker Hacihaliloglu receives 2017 American Cancer Society – Institutional Research Grant Early Investigator Pilot Award: Dr. Hacihaliloglu has been awarded the 2017 American Cancer Society – Institutional Research Grant Early Investigator Pilot Award, which is a one-year $50,000 grant. Together with his collaborators from Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School (John Nosher, Eric Singer) and Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey (David Foran), Dr. Hacihaliloglu will develop new machine learning methods for accurate and robust classification of liver and kidney cancer from 3D ultrasound data.
Gormley lab awarded Busch Biomedical Grant: Professor Adam Gormley has been awarded a two-year, $40,000 Busch Biomedical Grant to develop novel polymers that can interface with and manipulate receptor proteins as therapeutics.
Busch Biomedical Grant Awarded to Dr. Hacihaliloglu: Dr. Ilker Hacihaliloglu has been awarded a two-year, $40,00 Busch Biomedical Grant for his project entitled “Learning-based Computational 3D Ultrasound Imaging Platform for Percutaneous Needle Guidance”. Together with collaborator Dr. John Nosher (Department of Radiology, Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School) Dr. Hacihaliloglu will develop new computational methods for processing three-dimensional (3D) radiofrequency ultrasound data for robust visualization and localization of needles for continuous, real-time and accurate guidance to anatomical structures. The technology has applications in numerous minimally invasive procedures such as core needle biopsies, epidural administration, peripheral nerve blocks, and tumor ablation.

Vanity Fair Features Engineering’s Olabisi: Department of Biomedical Engineering assistant professor Ronke Olabisi was among eight “STEM luminaries” featured in the December 2016 issue of Vanity Fair. “Saluting a New Guard of STEM Stars” was co-sponsored by IBM to celebrate the film Hidden Figures, which tells the story of the contributions African-American women made to the space race of the 1950s and 1960s, by highlighting today’s accomplished women scientists and engineers who are “working for expanded inclusion for the next generation.”
Olabisi was interviewed along with her mentor Mae Jemison, a medical doctor and the first woman of color to travel to space as part of NASA's Endeavor mission. The article also included Michio Kaku, Anne Wojcicki, Kimberly Bryant, Jedidah Isler, Debbie Sterling, and Diana Albarrán Chicas.
On inclusion in STEM fields, Olabisi says, “To me diversity is not just differently colored people—it’s people from different walks of life and genders. I had a physics student from a disadvantaged background, and there was an enclosure we needed to build. This student came up with a really elegant solution to the problem having come from a background where the family had to figure stuff out with zero budget.”

ACS-IRG Early Investigator Pilot Award granted to Prof. Adam Gormley:
Professor Adam Gormley has been awarded an American Cancer Society – Institutional Research Grant Early Investigator Pilot Award. This one-year $50,000 grant is to support development of bioactive nanomedicines that target receptor proteins on cancer cells.
July 31, 2017: Yarmush and Colleagues Receive NIH Grant to Develop New Liver Preservation Technique: Professor Martin Yarmush and colleagues from Massachusetts General Hospital have been awarded a 4-year, $1,539,000 research grant from the NIH for a project entitled, "High subzero preservation of liver for transplantation”. The project proposes a method for preserving mammalian organs which employs hibernating and freeze-tolerant strategies from nature, that are further augmented using bioengineering principles.

June 28, 2017: Dr. Hacihaliloglu was awarded the second place for the ' Best Technical Podium Paper Competition' at the 17th Annual Meeting of the International Society for Computer Assisted Orthopedic Surgery (CAOS) which was held in Aachen Germany from June 14-17. The research paper was reporting on the results obtained from the 2016-2017 Senior Design project (Christina Spinelli, Michael Cieslak, Nick Rupertus, Peidong He, Zahraa Alsinan) which was performed under the supervision of Dr. Hacihaliloglu.
The annual meeting of CAOS International gather’s the world’s top leading experts in the fields of computer and robotic assistance in orthopedic surgery and traumatology. It provides a forum for surgeons, biomedical engineers, companies and researchers to meet and exchange ideas.
June 27, 2017: Professor Biju Parekkadan has developed a new technology -- LASSO (long-adapter single-strand oligonucleotide) probes -- that can capture and clone thousands of long DNA fragments at once. This technology will allow scientists to create massive libraries of proteins from DNA samples, potentially ushering in a new era of functional genomics. The research is published in Nature Biomedical Engineering https://goo.gl/rSwn5c.
