No matter how much pressure a compressor can deliver, you still need a certain volume of air to run your equipment correctly. So while you’re checking the pressure (PSI), be sure to check the cubic feet per minute (CFM), and make sure it fits your requirements.

A key question when figuring out what compressor you need is whether you need it to be oilless or to use oil. Some tools actually need oil in their air supply, while others need to make sure their air is clean.

The separator element in your air compressor serves to prevent the excessive use of oil in the system. However, it does need to be replaced periodically, typically every 1,000 hours of operation.

While there are many different types of air compressors, they all essentially work the same: increasing the pressure and reducing the volume of a given gas, such as air, and thus powering the tool or other mechanism.

When you’re choosing a compressor, take a careful look at both the number and type of tools it can run. The same compressor might be able to handle only four framing guns but up to seven roofing guns.

With air compressors, the numbers tell the story. Motors in smaller compressors are sometimes rated in horsepower (hp) rather than ACFM (actual cubic feet per minute). Multiply the hp rating by 3.5 and 4.0 to quickly estimate the ACFM range.

Reciprocating air compressors are inexpensive, easy to clean and maintain, and are sufficiently suitable for high-pressure applications. Reciprocating air compressors also allow you to "customize" the high pressure needed per application.
