AAJA at ASU's statement on the mass shootings that occurred in Monterey Park and Half Moon Bay:

AAJA at ASU is devastated by the mass shootings committed in Monterey Park and Half Moon Bay over the past few days. We are saddened that this happened during Lunar New Year, a time of celebration for many in the Asian American and Pacific Islander community.

In the past few years, our community has suffered from a rise of hate and violence coming from outside and within. With the suspects of the recent shootings being members of the AAPI community, media members must make the effort to utilize resources to ensure cultural sensitivity and the use of more accurate language.

We encourage everyone to refer to the AAJA Style guide before reporting anything: bit.ly/3j6mToc
