We raise Black Soldier Flies at the Worm Farm to feed our hens. Aside from being a super treat for the ladies, BSFs have now been shown to reduce antibiotic resistant genes (ARGs).

The laymen's summary: this process gives us healthier eggs - we don't use antibiotics AND the antibiotics we worry about making their way from food processes to you get reduced by the BSF process.

Here is the scientific details:

A study by the leading research team has shown that feeding garbage to flies and then the fly larvae to hens had a dramatic effect:

1. BSF reduced ARGs by 95%.
2. The remaining bacteria, which was primarily Firmicutes had a 65% reduction in ARGs.
3. Human pathogen populations declined by 70-92%.

These data are tremendous as they demonstrate other benefits of using BSF to recycle animal wastes- not just food wastes.
