We’re sitting in the pits at Osborne,Ks relaxing after our long drive.
Thankful the weather isn’t too warm, there’s a breeze blowing and the local liquor store had a couple of 16oz 6 paks of the American Rebel beer that I’ve been wanting to try.

Nathan Renfrow and I are leaving in the morning to drive to Osborne, Ks for the first 2 races of the 4 Kansas races next week.
As normal for my Kansas trips, I spent $100 today on snacks and drinks and still need beer and ice. 😂
I’m not going to name him, but he knows who he is.
Back in 78 and 79 the young son of the owners of a local Harley dealer in Ohio often traveled with me to the races.
The weekend race schedule back then could be pretty hectic. I didn’t have money for a motel room after the races, and it didn’t really matter because we usually only had enough time after one race to make the drive to the next race.
Like many other racers, I had a Dodge Maxi Van with everything I owned loaded in it as we traveled race to race all over the east coast.
After a late Saturday night race I was driving to a Sunday race and exhaustion hit me hard.
I woke up my traveling companion and told him that he needed to drive for awhile so that I could get a nap in.
His response was, I don’t have a drivers license, I’m only 15.
I looked him straight in the eyes and said, I didn’t ask you if you had a license, I said that you needed to drive.
The kid did fine and we made it to the next race without any problems.
Not that I had anything to do with it, but today that young man owns his own business in Ohio and has a fantastic family.

Leaving Phoenix July 30th,
be home August 7th.
2 days driving, 4 races over 5 days, and 2 days driving.
Not much relaxing time, but that’s the life of a racer.
AFT is on Fox Sports 1 now.

How I miss the 70’s.
75-125 Novices showed up every weekend to Ohio fairgrounds for the races.
And the grandstands were full.
I’m pretty sure that this is a Bert Shepherd photo.
