Talking to a good friend of mine. he's a fellow Vet. It's been a week or so since we've seen each other although we text almost every day. He is a great friend. I know him to be understanding and compassionate he Anchors all this with his love of God.
He cares. He listens. He calls and follows up. he takes the time to help. I think he knows it's a two way street. Helping others helps him. Kind of a smart ass. but a great guy

Another gentleman walks in. "Welcome to post 5” My buddy and I say. He sits, takes out his Get to know your Post map orders a beer and introduces himself. The small talk starts with a joke about what service we were all in. Both of these buttholes say "Oooo, what trauma did you have?" Was your steak not cooked rite? I said "Once I had to take my eggs back 3 times"!! Tell me Airforce ain't the best Branch.
He takes a little tour of our post, we talk about riders, about the people he's met collecting his stamps. He mentions all these (Be The One) patches on riders vest and on signs and posters in the Posts he's visited. The conversation turns to this "Be The One" Campaign that is going on in the Legion. It's a matter we members care deeply for. How important it is to listen, to and try to recognize fellow Vets, Friends and family members that are falling apart.
And how "BeThe One" To Care enough to Listen and help get our fellow Vet to the places where help may be available, To Be the One that breaks this Horrible 22link chain. Think about this, It's not just the brutality of combat that puts this chain on Veterans. it's the very Nature of being A United States Military Service member.
Our Veterans carry out orders, Work closely with others to Selflessly Complete the mission. and then Move on to the next task. to most of us, Being part of a team is Normal life for the duration of their enlistment. It is oddly satisfying.

Upon discharge A Veterans world can change Drastically. No teamwork, No clear direction, No mission to complete. All of us feel this, Some of us can't get over it.

We next talk about available help. VA?! all of us laugh and tell our stories about dealing with the V A.
Can you Imagine being a Vet like we just described, On the edge, Lost confused feeling like no one cares. Having to go thru the Nightmare of enrolling in the VA!?
How many of us have and are having these experiences right Now? 5 years after my Discharge. I went to the VA to enroll. I was told I made too much money and Turned Away.. 12 years of service, and I was turned away.

For 25 more years I paid for health insurance. I ritefully I should have had from the VA. Now I'm 60 and brother let me tell you, It's Not Any Easier dealing with the VA. Today.

We Veterans, Conditioned to follow orders, have just lived with it. We just put that Heavy 22 link chain on and stand in line. to get denied. to resubmit. get denied again. To have no Clear path finding the help you need. And for 22 of us, we succumb to the demons of our soul. and worse the Beurocratic Demons that care only for Money. Stats.

An idea came out.
Why can't enrollment in the VA be made at time of discharge from military service. Why can't we have VA services involved in debriefing every eligible Vet. Let them know The programs and options for them. Where to go when you have questions. Where to turn before that 22 link chain drags you down.

My friend was the "One". He took Be the One to heart. At least twice a week he talked to a fellow Vet, Sometimes giving advice, Giving direction, But mostly listening. Being a true friend.

He paid his tab, said "see ya fu**er" and started for home.

Halfway there he received a text. that his friend took his life.

Be the One. needs help.

We are failing our vets. Statistics show that 22 is no longer the number. it varies from year to year. the latest data is from 2022... says that over 6400 veterans took their own lives that year, this number does not include Active duty military.

What we are doing is a disgrace. We should Not Just Lobby for More support. We should Demand Change. Veterans that can Stand, Must Stand for those who Cannot.

Let's "Be the Ones" to cast our Vote!

Lets "Be the Ones" to bring about Real Tangible Change in Veterans Healthcare!

Let's "Be the Ones" to see this thru and bring Not just attention to veterans needs But to actually Solve them!

We Veterans and members of the American legion "Being the Ones"
can give "Be the One" a fighting chance.
