J2 recently celebrated the grand opening of the South Mountain Activity Complex with the City of Phoenix 🌵

The project includes new ramadas (including a half-acre pavilion), expanded parking and roadway networks, improved pedestrian circulation and gathering areas, and more. The design was developed within the existing disturbed footprint, with improvements carefully restoring native edges to seamlessly blend into the surrounding preserve.

The City of Glendale recently celebrated the opening of Bonsall Park 🌿

With a goal to restore a more family-friendly atmosphere, the City partnered with J2 to reimagine the space. Our team provided master planning, landscape architecture, irrigation design, and construction documents to help bring new life to the park.

In March 2025, Wheat Design Group and J2 Design joined forces—bringing J2’s presence to Tucson and growing a team deeply rooted in the local community.

Our staff live, play, and find inspiration in the same spaces they help design, shaping meaningful landscape architecture projects throughout the area. 🚲

From concept to community centerpiece 🌿

Following the drainage study, J2 partnered with the Town of Queen Creek to construct a 90-acre community park—leading master planning, design, and construction on a tight timeline to bring Frontier Family Park to life as a space where the community can gather, play, and connect.

Since opening in June 2024, the park has earned the Grand Award and Best Project Under $2.5 Million Award and has been featured in LASN.

We are excited to announce that Wheat Design Group has become a part of J2 Design. Wheat Design Group’s existing staff will continue to operate in Tucson, AZ as J2’s Tucson office location under the name Wheat, a J2 Design Studio. Laura Mielcarek, PLA, Wheat’s principal, will continue to serve as the Tucson studio director and will be supported by J2’s principals Jeff Velasquez, PLA, Aaron Allan, PLA, and Jason Touchin, PE. The combined team will continue to focus on developing creative sustainable design solutions for our clients. The firm will now have 39 dedicated professionals serving our clients throughout the state of Arizona. We are looking forward to providing expanded design capabilities for both existing J2 and Wheat clients and new clients in Southern Arizona and across the state.
