1. Nobody knows what you’re accomplishing at work unless you tell them. Send weekly updates to your manager, reply to every email, partake in team building activities.

2. Yes college degrees still matter, they are a personal branding and self-confidence tool. Just try not to go into more than 20k in debt for one. Online degrees are legitimate, check out Western Governors University.

3. LinkedIn and Indeed are the only job boards I use, because it’s they’re the only job boards recruiters use. Don’t waste time using a bunch of job boards. Use 3 max.

4. If you’re not getting interviews, you’re positioning yourself wrong, or you’re targeting the wrong jobs. Make sure your resume is tailored for 1 specific role. If you’re targeting multiple roles, you need a tailored resume for each one. 

5. If you’re getting interviews but not getting offers, you don’t understand what the employer is looking for and how to convince them you’re the one they want. Make sure you read and understand the job description for the job you’re interviewing for.

6. Interview questions should always be answered with stories. Use the STAR method. Have 5-10 stories ready.

7. Reply to everyone’s email at work, even mass emails, and even if it’s just a thank you. Very important for remote workers. If you’re not replying, they’ll think you’re not working.

8. When communicating to executives, BLUF (bottom line up front). They don’t want all the backstory. They just want the TLDR. 

9. Small experiements > massive career moves. Instead of considering going back to school, start with one class. Instead of making a massive career shift all at once, try and do a project or a gig.

LinkedIn is a non-negotiable if you are on your job search. Resumes that have a LinkedIn profile on them get 71% more callbacks than resumes that don’t. Recruiters these days are always checking your LinkedIn profile to get a better understanding of who you are. And if you have a good LinkedIn profile, it will set you apart from all the other candidates. That’s because most people do not have a good LinkedIn profile. It’s a super easy way to set yourself apart and if you’re on the job search, you HAVE to have it.

   

I don’t recommend going into massive debt, but that’s not necessary to get a degree.

How to do it: Choose a skill. Find a good way to learn it like an online course on Udemy or YouTube, put it in your calendar, and get going! Bonus: If you have the resources, hire a tutor. That will fast track your learning. These days you can hire someone on Fiverr for cheap.
