There’s a reason that when Dr. Julia LaRosa walks into our PATHS Center at Perryville, our women cheer louder than they would for Taylor Swift.

“Dr. Jules,” as she’s affectionately known, has been with Career PATHS from the beginning. She’s encouraged and supported our ladies while helping shape the program into what it is today, including creating the opportunity for participants to take two for-credit Arizona State University courses while they’re incarcerated to make it easier for them to transition into college in the future.

And the feeling is mutual. Dr. Jules calls working with Career PATHS one of the greatest joys of her career: “To journey alongside students as they transform their lives.”

This week, Dr. Jules and her ASU colleague Kostas Voutsas, who teaches the ASU courses, were there to celebrate another milestone: the graduation of Career PATHS Cohorts 22 and 23. More photos and updates from the day to come next week!

Annmarie Cohen of BMO U.S. recently joined the women at Mom’s House for a class on credit building and credit repair, and several women who have already transitioned from Mom’s House came back to join them.

Good credit matters for every woman, but for women rebuilding their lives after incarceration, it can affect whether they can qualify for an apartment, finance a car to get to and from work, or access affordable credit when they need it.

So we get ahead of it.

Financial education is part of preparing women not just to come home, but to build financially independent lives once they do.

They want to put on makeup and do their hair. They want to look in the mirror and see themselves again. It might seem like a small thing, but it isn’t.
