At least that’s what happened when Veronica received her first paycheck from New Freedom and surprised everyone at Mom’s House with a sweet treat.

Most people think a great interview starts when you walk into the room. We know it starts long before that.

Brittany Truszkowski from Grand Canyon Law Group recently spent time at our transitional home, Mom’s House, helping our residents prepare for one of life’s biggest moments—a job interview.

Brittany shared practical advice, answered questions, and gave the women the confidence to show up as themselves and trust what they had to offer.

The response from the women was overwhelmingly positive. They spoke about Brittany’s warmth, patience, and genuine investment in their growth. Wendy summed it up perfectly:

“I’m so grateful to Brittany for creating a space where people can learn, grow, and believe in themselves.”

When a woman returns home after incarceration, her children get their mother back, and new memories begin to replace years that were lost.

Dorothy worked hard to rebuild her life, but she didn’t have to do it alone. Through our PATHS program, she found the support, guidance, and skills to become the mother she longed to be.

Today, Dorothy tucks her children into bed and reads them stories—something that once felt out of reach.

First, because our own Michelle Cirocco’s byline appeared in newsweek.

Second, because she put words to something we don’t talk about enough: we all carry a picture in our heads of someone who’s been to prison—and it’s never us. Until we meet someone who looks like us, sounds like us, or reminds us of someone we love. Suddenly, that picture starts to fall apart.

Turns out, one of the things you can take home from prison is a really good friend. ❤️

The women who go through PATHS together learn together, challenge each other, celebrate each other’s wins and sometimes become the people they call when life on the outside gets hard.

On International Day of Friendship, we’re celebrating the friendships that start inside and make their way home.

This research validates what our work has taught us: language shapes perception before proximity ever gets the chance to.

HR Dive recently covered a new study finding that how employers explain fair-chance hiring matters. Compliance-focused language can reinforce negative perceptions, while framing the same policies around fairness and ethics can reduce them.

We see the other half of that story every day.

When employers meet the women we serve, "justice-impacted" stops being a label. They meet talented, ambitious women preparing for careers. They hear about the children waiting for them at home, the families they're rebuilding, the futures they're working toward.

But not everyone gets that proximity firsthand. For everyone else, the only second chance they'll ever "meet" is the one in how we talk about it.

If we talk about fair-chance hiring as an obligation, we shouldn't be surprised when people see it as one.

But when we tell the human story — what a second chance means for an individual, a family, a workplace, a community — we give people a reason to believe in it.

That's the difference between checking a box and changing a perspective.
