Instead, it sold over 30 million, knocked Michael Jackson off the top of the charts and killed 80s hair metal overnight. Cobain, Novoselic, and Grohl created more than a hit record, it was a cultural hard reset. Nevermind gave Generation X a voice that wasn't plastic or performative—replacing arena swagger with raw alienation, thrift-store flannels, and uncompromising punk ethics. It dragged underground culture into the absolute center of the mainstream and changed how a generation dressed, thought, and listened.

Road to Ruin proved the Ramones could stretch their sound without losing an ounce of leather-jacket grit.
