The safest drivers give themselves time to react. Keeping at least 4 seconds of following distance can improve visibility, reduce sudden braking, and provide valuable time to respond safely to hazards on the road. Increase your following distance even more when there is inclement weather or poor visibility.

Safety Tip: Stay alert and scan ahead for anything in your lane or on the shoulder. If you spot debris, slow down smoothly, maintain your lane, and avoid sharp movements. When possible, safely change lanes. Reporting debris to the appropriate authorities or dispatch helps protect other drivers who may encounter the same hazard.
