🕊️💛 In Loving Memory of Dolly Parton (1946–2026) 💛🕊️
Dolly Parton gave more to this world than music. She gave money, time, and heart to causes most people never even knew about — and one of our favorite stories about her involves two macaws. 🦜🦜
Back when she had her ABC variety show, the production brought in a pair of macaws for a segment. Here's what most people don't know: macaws are NOT easy birds. They're huge, brilliant, and their beaks can do real damage in the wrong hands — we actually took in a rescue macaw whose previous owner lost part of a finger to him just a week before he came to us. 😳 These birds are not starter pets, and they read people fast.
And yet — those macaws were calm around Dolly. 🎶 Parrots are incredible at sensing energy. They pick up on fear, tension, anything "off." A macaw doesn't relax around just anybody. But Dolly walked in warm and steady, and they settled right in beside her. We like to think they knew exactly who she was. 💛
And honestly? It fits. Dolly wasn't just a friend to birds in a photo op. Her Dollywood theme park has run a bald eagle sanctuary for decades, helping release over 180 eagles back into the wild. 🦅 She spoke openly about protecting the Smoky Mountains she grew up in, saying we need to "pay more attention to how we're treating our world." Between the Imagination Library, disaster relief for her home state, and her love for wildlife and the land, her generosity never had limits. 🌎💛
Rest easy, Dolly. Thank you for the music, the generosity, and for trusting our feathered friends enough to share your spotlight. 🕊️

🚨 FOUND COCKATIEL: 23rd Ave & Glendale (Phoenix, AZ) 🚨
A local public pool called us after this sweet lost cockatiel flew onto their property! Staff managed to enclose him in a storage room, and after a few tries, we caught him mid-air to safely bring him in (check out that money shot! 🦜💨).
📍 FOUND LOCATION: Near 23rd Avenue & Glendale Avenue in Phoenix, AZ.
🔒 SCAMMER PREVENTION: We are intentionally not sharing a clear picture of him. He has two very distinct physical features, and his true owner will easily be able to identify them.

🦜✨ PANCHO’S INCREDIBLE BEAK TRANSFORMATION!
Meet Pancho! She is a resilient Amazon parrot with a split bottom beak from an injury years ago, which caused her top beak to become severely overgrown.
To make sure we were giving her the absolute best care, we took her to see avian specialist Dr. Anthony Pilny ar Exotic Pet Vets . After getting expert advice on proper grooming techniques and ongoing maintenance, it was time to get to work!
Watch the video to see clips of the careful filing process from every angle, followed by her incredible transformation at the end. She looks—and feels—so much better! 💚

🧠 The Science: Why Do Parrots Prefer Men or Women? 🚻🦜
Have you ever wondered why some birds only love men or women? While "Team Boys vs. Team Girls" is incredibly common, avian behaviorists (like noted expert Howard Voren) explain that parrots don't actually understand human "gender". Instead, they use "form recognition"—categorizing us by physical silhouettes, voice pitches, and visual markers.
Here is what drives these strong preferences:
🗣️ Vocal Pitch & Tone: High-pitched, soft voices can sound gentle and non-threatening, while deep, booming voices can either startle a sensitive bird or make others feel exceptionally secure.
👤 Physical Size: As prey animals, parrots are hyper-aware of stature. Taller frames, broader shoulders, or sudden movements can easily trigger instinctual fear.
💔 Past Trauma & Abuse: Parrots have exceptional long-term memories. If a bird was ever neglected, mistreated, or abused by a specific "form" (such as a tall man with a beard, or a woman with bright nail polish), they can develop a deep, lifelong aversion to anyone who shares those physical traits.
💘 The "One-Person" Instinct: In the wild, parrots mate for life. In a home, they often choose a single human as their "spouse" and actively reject everyone else.

⛈️ SAFE INSIDE VS. FIGHTING THE STORM OUTSIDE: What to do when monsoons hit Arizona.
When the thunder rolls through the valley, our rescue flock is cozy, dry, and completely unbothered. But for wild birds outside, an Arizona monsoon is a brutal fight for survival. 🌪️🌵
During and after major storms, our phones ring constantly with calls about injured or grounded wild birds. While we desperately wish we could take them all, Valleywide Parrot Rescue does not have the medical setup, licensing, or specialized caging for native wildlife.
They must go to a licensed wildlife rehabilitator. We highly recommend reaching out to Liberty Wildlife Rehabilitation Center at (480) 998-5550. They are hands-down one of the most reputable, experienced, and incredible wildlife facilities in Arizona! 🦅🏥
Because wildlife centers are often closed overnight, here is your quick-start guide to keeping an injured bird stable until you can get them to Liberty Wildlife the next morning:
📦 EMERGENCY OVERNIGHT WILD BIRD CARE
1. Fledgling Check: If it has feathers and is hopping, it’s a fledgling! If it isn't visibly injured and is safe from neighborhood cats, leave it be. The parents are almost certainly nearby watching. 🐣
2. The Box: Put the injured bird in a cardboard box with air holes. Line it with a smooth T-shirt (never a standard bath towel, as their claws and beaks get dangerously snagged in the loops).
3. The Environment: Keep the box closed in a warm, dark, and completely silent room away from family pets, noise, and direct AC drafts.
4. 🚫 ABSOLUTELY NO FOOD OR WATER:
The Science: When a bird is injured or in shock, its body goes into survival mode, diverting all blood flow away from the digestive system to protect its vital organs (the heart, brain, and lungs). If you force food or water into their beak, their body literally cannot process it, which can lead to organ failure or death. Weak birds are also highly likely to inhale water directly into their lungs, causing them to drown.
Trust the Process: It is hard to resist the urge to feed them, but a bird can easily and safely survive 12 to 24 hours without food or water. They cannot survive the stress of choking or digestive shut-down. The quiet, dark box is the best medicine they can get until morning.
5. Hands-Off: Keep handling to an absolute minimum. Human touch and eye contact cause fatal stress to a wild animal in shock.
