Have you ever noticed your parrot yawn?

Just like us, parrots yawn too! A yawn is often a sign that they’re sleepy, waking up, stretching, relaxing, or simply adjusting their crop after eating.

Most of the time, yawning is completely normal and nothing to worry about. In fact, it can be pretty adorable to watch!

However, if your feathered friend is yawning excessively or showing other symptoms such as sneezing, wheezing, tail bobbing, head shaking, or difficulty breathing, it may be worth a call to your avian veterinarian.

Now I’m curious…

Do your birds yawn? Have you ever caught them doing a big stretch and yawn at the same time? Share your stories (or photos!) in the comments.

I just love seeing those little baby chop faces! 🥰

These sweet parakeets impatiently wait every day for their fresh chop, and watching their excitement never gets old. There’s just something so heartwarming about seeing tiny beaks covered in veggies and fruit.

These are my babies (Jill’s flock), but we do have several parakeets currently available for adoption, as well as some adorable zebra finches looking for homes of their own.

I don’t have current photos of the adoptable birds yet, but I promise I’ll get some posted soon. Stay tuned!

Who else loves a good chop face?

Fresh chop + happy birds = one of the best parts of the day.

☀️ Summer Foods for Your Feathered Friends to Enjoy 🍉

As temperatures rise, many parrots enjoy cool, hydrating foods as part of a balanced diet. Here are some flock favorites:

🍉 Watermelon (seedless)
🍓 Strawberries
🫐 Blueberries
🍒 Cherries (pit removed)
🥭 Mango
🍍 Pineapple
🍑 Peaches (pit removed)
🥒 Cucumber
🌶️ Bell peppers
🥬 Leafy greens
🥥 Fresh coconut
🌽 Corn on the cob
🫛 Sugar snap peas

For an extra fun summer treat, try freezing small pieces of fruit inside ice cubes or serving chilled chop straight from the refrigerator. Many birds love foraging through cool treats on a hot day!

Remember, fresh foods should never replace a balanced diet of quality pellets, vegetables, and appropriate seeds or nuts. And as always, provide plenty of fresh, clean water throughout the day.

What’s your flock’s favorite summer snack? ☀️🦜🍓🍉🥒🍒

Why We Choose Parrots

By Oneta Carter – The Parrot Guru

Most people will never understand why we choose parrots.

They see the noise.

We hear the conversations.

They see the mess.

We see a life being lived.

They see a bird in a cage.

We see a member of our family.

Parrot people are different. We willingly open our homes and hearts to some of the most intelligent, emotional, demanding creatures on the planet. We accept shredded furniture, chewed woodwork, feathers floating through the air, and food scattered across the floor because we understand something others often do not.

The value of a parrot is not measured in convenience.

It is measured in connection.

A parrot is one of the few animals capable of choosing you every single day.

They don’t stay because you own them.

They stay because they trust you.

That trust is earned through thousands of tiny moments. Through every meal prepared, every cage cleaned, every late-night worry when they aren’t feeling well, every toy rotated, every bath offered, every whispered “good morning” and “good night.”

Parrots challenge us to become better caretakers, better observers, and often better people.

They force us to slow down.

To pay attention.

To listen.

To be present.

They celebrate with us when life is good. They comfort us when life is hard. Many parrot owners will tell you that during some of the darkest moments of their lives, it was the gentle eyes of a feathered companion that reminded them to keep going.

A parrot doesn’t care what kind of car you drive.

They don’t care how much money you make.

They don’t care about your title or your social status.

They care whether you showed up.

They care whether you kept your promises.

They care whether they can count on you.

In a world where loyalty often feels temporary, parrots offer something extraordinary. They offer a bond built on consistency, trust, and mutual respect.

For decades, they stand beside us.

They witness our marriages.

They watch our children grow.

They celebrate birthdays and holidays.

They survive moves, career changes, heartbreaks, and triumphs.

They become woven into the very fabric of our lives.

And one day, you realize something remarkable.

You never really rescued them.

They rescued you.

Their laughter filled empty rooms.

Their routines gave structure to difficult days.

Their affection healed wounds no one else could see.

Their presence made a house feel like home.

Parrots are not for everyone.

They were never meant to be.

But for those of us fortunate enough to share our lives with them, we understand a truth that is difficult to explain to the outside world.

Life is richer with feathers on the floor.

Life is brighter with a flock in the house.

Life is better when a parrot loves you.

And that is why we choose parrots.

Every single time.

Question:

When you make chop for your feathered friends, do you actually chop it by hand with a knife, or do you cheat and use a food processor?

I can’t seem to find the chopping attachment for my food processor, so lately I’ve been doing everything by hand. And honestly? I’ve found it rewarding in so many ways.

As I stand in the kitchen chopping fruits and vegetables, each bird seems to make a visit. Some stop by to supervise, some raid the treat jar, and some just want to see what I’m doing before moving on with their busy bird business.

What surprised me most is how much it reminds me of making a handmade gift for someone. As I chop, I find myself thinking about each bird—their favorite foods, the things they refuse to eat, their quirky little preferences and personalities. It’s a quiet time where I feel connected to every member of the flock.

Preparing their chop has become more than just making food. It’s become an act of love. I get just as much joy from creating their meals as I do from cooking for my family. ❤️

So, tell me… are you Team Knife 🔪 or Team Food Processor ⚙️? And do your birds come “help” in the kitchen too?

Happy World Parrot Day!

What out-of-the-ordinary special things have you done for your feathered friend?

Today, Ms. Cookie got to help make chop… or more accurately, help eat it while I was making it! 😂 She firmly believes quality control is a very important job, and she takes her duties quite seriously.

Whether it’s sharing a special treat, going on an adventure, getting a new toy, enjoying extra cuddle time, or simply helping with household chores, we’d love to hear how you’re celebrating your feathered companion today!

Share your photos and stories in the comments. Let’s celebrate the amazing parrots that make our lives brighter every day.
