You definitely should be adding strides to your weekly running routine! -What are they? Short 15-20 seconds runs at around your 1 mile race effort, with a 1 minute walk/jog for recovery. -Why should you do them? They help develop speed without serious wear and tear, activate different muscle groups and open up your range of motion, and the neuromuscular stimulus helps make you a more efficient runner.
-Start with 4 strides twice a week, and build from there.
Easy pace is where we should all be spending the bulk of our time as runners, at least 25% of our weekly volume, if not more, should be in this zone. Here are the keys:
1.) 59-74% of VO2 Max or 65-78% of max HR
2.) Develops the heart muscle with less wear and tear than higher intensities
3.) Most of all, it is an EFFORT. Running easy should, in fact, feel easy.

Some folks aren’t able to get out 5-6-7 days per week and that’s OK! You can still get a lot of work done in only 4 days, the key is to take advantage of the days that you do have. A Quality run, two easy days, and a long run are how I’d write that up, with the long run typically having some quality in it as well to maximize the time that you have. Want more info? Shared some thoughts on handling big races, and placing them up on a pedestal. Something that I was pretty awful at through most of my career.
I'm sure I'm not the only one who has struggled to shift from a results oriented mindset to a process oriented mindset, but that road for me has ended up with me enjoying the process of running a whole lot more.
Knock That Race off of it's Pedestal I started out with the idea to write about the five dumbest mistakes that I've made since I've been a runner. Now to be clear, I've made WAY more then five mistakes in my 20 years in the sport, but there are certainly some that I look back on that are dumber than others, especially in my adult years...

Wrote a little blog on my website about reclaiming your why for running.
We all lose that why every now and again, and sometimes it's good to unplug and put some thoughts into why you get out the door every day.
Would love to hear your why! Comment below if you're so inclined.
Reclaiming your Why We all run for different reasons. Some of us run to be competitive. Some run to be healthier, some want to run their first marathon, their 100th marathon, achieve a marathon PR, get a BQ, etc. There are a million reasons that someone is inspired to lace up their shoes and go for a run. Likely the re...

PR city for a few athletes today!!
crushed a 1:24:16 at the NYC 1/2 marathon. He's super fit and on his way to a great race at Rock and Roll San Diego.
Karthick rolled a 5 MINUTE PR at the Oakland 1/2 Marathon, his 2nd PR in a row.
Super proud of these guys and pumped to see what they can do over the course of their builds.

Wrote down some thoughts and reflections on myself as a younger athlete, and the mistakes I made. Always helpful to look back, reflect, and learn!
In the Long Run: Reflections on my Younger Self Today I set forth to lay out my thoughts on the stubborn bastard that was the younger version of myself, from an athletic perspective. While I would have lots of things to say to that idiot from a general life perspective (be better about money you fool!), the goal here is to focus on who I was as a...

One of my favorite parts of a good marathon cycle is the wide variety of efforts you get to hit over the course of it.
From long days in the desert to short VO2 sessions on the track, you have to be well rounded to be ready for the big day.
