a history of hawai'i 🌺 the philippines 🇵🇭 and amerikkkan empire 🤢🇺🇸🚫 part 1‼️

in the mid-late 1800s, with the amerikkkan project having colonized from one coast ⬅️ to the other ➡️, the ruling class needed to expand beyond amerikkkan borders 🌎 to avoid economic depression 😭😢 and financial ruin 😱. hawai'i and the philippines were callously seen 👁️👄👁️ as "strategically important" 😡 and so began a decades long 🗓️ campaign to absorb both countries into the
amerikkkan empire 👎🍅. with the outbreak of the spanish-amerikkkan war 🪖💥 in 1898, imperialists 🤑 jumped🐇 on the opportunity to expand their influence internationally 🌏 under the cover of war. as a result, hawai'i and the philippines were devoured by the amerikkkan empire in the same year 😔🤬.

Can Filipino/a/x Americans identify as Pacific Islanders?

We want to tackle this question to continue conversations on what solidarity can look like between Filipino/a/x Americans and Pacific Islanders, particularly on issues concerning anti-imperialism, Indigenous sovereignty, and land and ocean back.

until palestine is free, we are not free too. 🇵🇸🕊

until all indigenous resistors held captive by illegitimate settler-colonial projects masquerading as nations, until these fighters are freed, from the palestinians held in zionist prisons to the native hawaiians held in saguaro correctional center in arizona, we are not free too.

until the zionist apartheid wall, the u.s. border wall, and the militarized apparatuses restricting the movement of people maneuvering imperialist violence, until these barriers to our collective liberation crumble to the ground, we are not free too.

until genocidal blockades preventing people from accessing critical medical supplies, until these acts of war are lifted from gaza to cuba, we are not free too.

until undisturbed access to food, shelter, safety, and clean air and water is made available to all people, from the occupied west bank to the zone in downtown phoenix on occupied o’odham jewed, we are not free too.

and until all people living under the threat of displacement are guaranteed the right to keep their homes and the right to return to their homes, from palestine to periwinkle, we are not free too.

until all of us are free, none of us are free. from the mediterranean to the philippine sea, we all will be free. long live international solidarity. 🌍⚔️

There are parallels between the tenant struggles ⚔️ against displacement in Arizona 🏜 and the landless peasant struggles in the Philippines 🏝 The Philippines police and military continue to protect the bureaucrat capitalists’ dehumanizing efforts of exploitation & violence 🩸 towards farmers, fisherpeoples, and indigenous people throughout the country.

The bourgeoisie investment of military 👎 banking 🚫 and manufacturing industries 😣 plus further colonization 😔 and “land development 🙅‍♀️ exponentially increased the working class ⚒️ who sought housing in these “Sunbelt States,” which were primarily mobile home communities and trailer parks.

The emergence of suburbanization has driven the cycle of disinvestment (i.e. disrepair) 🚴 and reinvestment (i.e. gentrification) 🪦 of the mobile home communities, leading to the evictions of working-class and poor peoples.

Mobile home communities in Arizona, such as the Mesa Royale tenants and Mesa Gardens residents, have successfully organized against the City of Mesa and their evictions recently in 2015 and 2021. This shows us that we can work together to fight back displacement 🤺

Residents in Periwinkle ❤️‍🔥 Las Casitas 💝 and Weldon Court Parks 💖 in Arizona were able to pressure against landlords & extend their eviction deadline. They continue to struggle ✊ against Grand Canyon University 👿 as part of the university-industrial complex, in addition to small businesses such as the Southwest Auto Auction (landlord of Las Casitas) 🤮 real estate investor firms such as Moderne Apartments (landlord of Weldon Court) 🤢 nonprofits like Trellis 🤡 the landlord-friendly City Council 😑 the moneys and even the big-wigs implicated in the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce 🙄

📢 CALLING FILIPINX DIASPORA AND ALLIES📢

On July 25th, from 6-8PM at First Church Phoenix, Anakbayan Phoenix will be hosting a viewing of the Philippines' PSONA.

PSONA is the Philippine people's response to the state of the nation address held by the Philippine government. It is a direct protest to the corrupt U.S. backed government in the Philippines that has recently elected the son of Marcos, a terrible dictator who oppressed, killed, and stole from the masses before the People's Power Movement exiled them from the Philippines. PSONA is only the beginning of the fight for freedom! It is the Philippine people's voices, rising up and screaming that we will not sit in hopeless despair and turn our backs on the efforts of those who came before us. There is hope and we will continue to resist--the people cannot be silenced.

There will be a potluck and art/prop making while we watch the PSONA stream. Afterwards we will debrief and hang out!

We hope to see you at First Church at 6PM on Monday the 25th ✊!

Please feel free to bring items for artmaking, or for the potluck--but please sign up/send what you will be bringing so we are prepared.

[Summary]
⚪️What: PSONA streaming, debrief, potluck, & art
⚪️When: July 25th, 2022 at 6PM

In the Philippines, unofficial results are showing a Marcos-Duterte victory in the recent national elections. Yet the masses are rejecting it due to the massive disinformation campaign, voting irregularities, voter disenfranchisement, and electoral violence.

Thus, calling on Filipinos, Filipinx/a/o Americans, and allies in Arizona, Anakbayan Phoenix is coordinating an action on May 13, Friday, at Jollibee to express indignation against the fraudulent elections and to stand for democracy in the Philippines.

See you!
