She Wouldn’t Let Anyone Near That Pipe — It Took Three Days
Checked the living room cam after I heard a thump. Still can't explain how he knew.
Water came up around 4am. Third street we searched that morning — heard him before we saw him, up on a garage roof with nowhere to go.

The Only Warm Spot in the Yard

I wasn't expecting to rescue anything that morning.
I was simply taking my dog for a walk through the local park when he suddenly stopped in the middle of the trail. No matter how much I called him, he refused to move. Instead, he kept staring at the base of a large maple tree. At first, I thought he'd spotted a rabbit. Then I heard a tiny squeaking sound. Hidden in the grass was a baby squirrel with its little front paw tightly tangled in a piece of discarded fishing line. The line was wrapped around a fallen branch, and every time the squirrel tried to climb back into the tree, it was pulled right back to the ground. It was exhausted and too weak to free itself.
I knelt beside the squirrel while my dog quietly sat next to me, as if he understood he needed to stay calm. The frightened little squirrel tried to pull away, but it didn't have the strength. Using the small pocket knife I always carried, I carefully cut through the fishing line one strand at a time. After several careful minutes, the final loop slipped free. The squirrel didn't run. Instead, it paused, stretched its tiny paw, and slowly climbed onto the fallen branch.
Halfway up the branch, the little squirrel stopped and looked back at us. Just then, the leaves rustled overhead. An adult squirrel raced down the trunk of the maple tree, hurried straight to the baby, gently touched noses with it, and nudged it toward the tree. Without hesitation, the little squirrel followed. Together they climbed higher and higher until they disappeared into the branches. It was one of the sweetest moments I've ever witnessed.
The next morning, my dog and I walked the same trail again. As we passed the maple tree, two squirrels were chasing each other through the branches. One paused, climbed down to the lowest limb, and chattered while watching us pass. Maybe it was the same little squirrel. Maybe it wasn't. I'll never know. But every time my dog reaches that tree, he still looks up before moving on—and so do I. Because sometimes the smallest lives leave the biggest memories, all because one curious dog refused to keep walking. 🐿❤️

I found the baby squirrel in the middle of a bicycle path.
At first, I thought it was a pinecone. Then it moved. It was so tiny it fit in the palm of my hand, with barely-open eyes and a fluffy tail that was still much too small for its body. The poor little thing was shivering. Looking up, I spotted a large oak tree with a squirrel's nest tucked high among the branches. Broken limbs were scattered across the ground, and it was clear the previous night's storm had likely knocked the baby from its nest. I stepped back and waited, hoping its mother would return. Nearly an hour passed, but she never came, and the little squirrel grew weaker with every minute.
I gently wrapped the baby in my scarf and called a local wildlife rehabilitator. She told me to keep it warm and bring it in right away. When I arrived, she smiled and said, "You did exactly the right thing." The baby was dehydrated but otherwise healthy. She explained that squirrels this young rarely survive long on the ground without help. Knowing it was safe was a huge relief.
Over the next several weeks, I visited the rehabilitation center whenever I could. Each time, the little squirrel looked stronger than before. Its tiny tail became full and fluffy, it learned to climb branches with confidence, and before long it was leaping from perch to perch as if it had been doing it its whole life. Watching its progress was a reminder of just how resilient wild animals can be when they're given a second chance.
One crisp autumn morning, the rehabilitator invited me to watch the release. We walked into a quiet woodland, and she opened the carrier. The little squirrel hesitated for only a moment before climbing the nearest tree. Halfway up, it paused, looked back in our direction, then disappeared into the canopy with one graceful leap. That was the last time I ever saw it, and honestly, I hope it stayed that way. Because the happiest rescue stories aren't always the ones where an animal comes home with you. Sometimes the happiest ending is watching them return to the place they were always meant to be. 🐿❤️
