Radioactive Antiqies and the Unspoken

In July 2025, the Navajo community of Béésh Haagééd was blindsided when a Praxis Mining Consultant showed up pushing to reopen the nearby copper mine. The community immediately rejected the proposal due to cancer rates within the community and the scars left from previous mining operations. A month later, Chakana Copper the company who hired the consultants tried to slip in a reconnaissance request to Chapter officials, but the community voted it down.
Later in January 2026, Chakana Copper then went around the community and secured a permit through the corrupt Navajo Nation’s Minerals Department. This permit went completely against the community’s wishes. With the request reconnaissance began and is still happening today. Now the company is trying to push forward with exploratory drilling however they cannot move forward without Chapter’s authorization… again the community refuses to give it. But who’s to say they won’t go over the heads of the community again?
Now the matriarchs of Béésh Haagééd and the community is standing firm. They are organizing, resisting, and raising funds for any actions going forward. Just like with my uranium pieces, they are using the very thing that threatens them. Using copper against copper. Community members are creating beaded copper jewelry to fight back against colonization and corporate greed.
