The line can get pretty fine between consistency and confusion.

We know consistency in digital product design builds trust, but too much overlap could cause confusion.

For example, reusing the same icons for different purposes, making icons the same color or a similar shape, you may think equals consistency but instead leads to confusion. 🤔

Consistency is good, but not at the expense of usability. When usability comes first in design, consistency often comes along with it and the trust of our users. Oh, and our users will have a positive experience as a plus! 👍

⭐ ️So remember: make it usable first, and consistency will follow!

When you come across user interface (UI) faux pas in the wild, you might not recognize why but you know something feels off. 🤔 Sometimes these simple tweaks can make all the difference!💡

⭐ Radio button vs. dropdown:
Have you ever felt overwhelmed or confused by the number of options on a product? Sometimes this can happen when radio buttons are used when a dropdown would be better! We're not out here picking favorites; there's a method to the madness. To avoid information overload for the user and save valuable screen space, consider using radio buttons for around four options or less. Four or more? That's what dropdowns are for!

⭐ Shady shadows:
The best way to avoid unnatural-looking shadows on your elements is not to use pure black drop shadows. Instead, add a darker hue of the background color to the shadow to make it look more real world.

⭐️ Not so easy on the eyes:
Do you find yourself adjusting the brightness on certain websites? Too pure a white can be jarring, especially when used in a primarily dark color scheme. Darkening the white a bit will help soften things up. 😎

Give it a read to find out if your headings are as accessible as they can be, but here are some highlights we 💙

⭐ ️Use one unique h1 per page that describes what that page is about. That h1 preferably starts just above the main content.

⭐ ️Use headings to describe the content below. Don't use an HTML heading just to make the text appear bigger or stand out.

⭐️ Use heading levels like the index of a book: hierarchical.

⭐️ Don't choose a heading by its size, but by its level in the context of the content.

⭐️ Don' t skip a heading level from the top down.

Accessible heading structure - The A11Y Project Headings are the backbone of the content of a page. A visitor should be able to scan or navigate a webpage using headings to get a good impression of its content.

User flows have many... uses, but let's start with what they are! 🤔

User flows are visual diagrams that outline a user's path while interacting with a digital product (digital product = intangible goods that exist in digital form). 

When creating user flows, we layout a user's path from multiple entrance points through decision points to their conversion point. 🙌

So, why do we need to think through a user's path? 

⭐ User flows help digital product creators make intuitive interfaces (interface = where the user interacts with the digital product). 

⭐ Identifying a clear user flow presents the digital product to the user in the best way possible. 

⭐ When we create user flows for existing interfaces, they help uncover gaps in content and missing screens.

So, what's with the shapes? 🔵 🟦 🔷

The shapes that make up a user flow don't just look interesting; they're symbolic! 

⚡ Start/End Point Capsule: this symbol indicates a user's starting point or exit point. 

⚡ Process Rectangle: indicates steps a user must take to complete their desired task. 

⚡ Input / Output Parallelogram: indicates a point in which information is given or received. 

⚡ Decision Diamond: indicates any choice that a user must make in the process. 

Outlining a user flow leads to an intentional and intuitive experience, undoubtedly leading to warm, fuzzy feelings while using your digital product! 🤗

Links make up the web. We're clicking them all day. But what makes us choose one link over another? 🤔 A concept called Information Scent! 💡

Information Scent is relative. If you're searching for a new car, for example, finding one link, "New Car for Sale" has a higher Information Scent for you than another link, "New CARS Movie Tickets."

Users look at multiple factors when deciding if clicking on a link is worth it. They consider the question, "How relevant is the information here going to be for me?" The answer to that question is determined by:

⭐ ️Link Label
Keep a link label brief and accurate. If it's relevant and easy to understand, the user is likely to click the link.

⭐ ️Content with the Link
Next to links, we'll often find an image or short description to give the user more information about what they will see when they click the link. Adding cues will add to the Information Scent of the link.

⭐ ️User's Prior Knowledge/Experience
Your users may have used your site before, gotten a recommendation from someone they know, or seen a review from someone they don't know. These factors all influence how likely someone is to click a link.

In the case of Information Scent, the smellier (i.e., simple, intuitive, relevant), the better for your users. 👏

Did you know your short-term memory can hold about seven chunks of information at one time? 💡

And those chunks start to fade after about 20-30 seconds. 🤔

That's some precious bandwidth!

This is why as web and UX designers, we focus on recognition rather than recall.

Examples of recognition in UX:

⭐ Highlight the user path.
Include cues like active navigation items and breadcrumbs to orient the user.

⭐️ Provide tools that help decision-making.
Comparing products or membership levels? Provide comparison tables for all options on the same screen.

⭐ Reduce mental load.
Lessen the amount of information that a user has to remember.
For example, display search terms with the results.

Remember, give users a mental break! 🙌

User Personas are fictional characters created to represent a user of your brand, website, app, and more! 🎉

They include personal details about the person and their motivations and any frustrations related to your brand. These are not real people, but we use them as a check-in point for all user experience decision-making.

If a decision isn't serving our users, we rethink the strategy. 💡

So why do we create user personas? Let's explore!

⭐️ Empathy
When we start from the perspective of "How does this affect the user?" we end up with a product they are more likely to engage with positively.

⭐️ Galvanization
In large organizations, different people can tend to fight from their corner. When we approach all questions with users in mind, we row in the same direction.

⭐ ️Ideation
In creating users, we discover wants and motivations that we may have never considered before.

⭐ ️Iteration
As we design and develop, continually bringing the questions back to how they service the users gives us a benchmark to base all decisions.

⭐ ️Quality Assurance
Users help our QA team approach a finished product with users firmly in mind.
