Poem : Never Asked You to Love Me, She Said
I never asked you to love me, she said,
like love was a favor,
like my wanting safety
was a demand too loud.
I asked for presence.
I asked for truth.
I asked not to feel alone
while standing right beside you.
I watched you pour your pain
into hands that once let you go,
while I held space for you
with empty palms and a full heart.
I wasn’t angry.
I was aching.
There’s a difference
you never learned to hear.
I stayed quiet because loving you
felt like choosing patience over pride,
but patience turned into waiting,
and waiting turned into grief.
I never asked you to love me.
I asked you not to make me feel
like loving you
was my mistake.

I’m blaming myself
for letting you in,
for opening doors
I thought were locked.

I gave you pieces
of me I don’t give lightly,
and now I carry the weight
