THIS FRIDAY (9/4) 6PM‼️We can’t wait to open our Fall exhibition 𝐀𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐩𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲 𝟐.𝟎: 𝟗% 𝐆𝐫𝐢𝐧, 𝟑𝟑% 𝐆𝐫𝐨𝐨𝐯𝐞. At 6:30PM, we will present a panel discussion with the artist Frank WANG Yefeng (Frank WANG Yefeng) joined by Lucas Blalock (LB) and Triton Mobley, exploring how rapid technological shifts redefine art, human agency, and collective authorship. This conversation will also be livestreamed on AAI’s YouTube Channel, if you can’t make it here in person!

Through this Fall season, our main gallery is transformed with an immersive video sculpture showcasing a project by Frank WANG Yefeng. The installation features digital avatars of the artist, created in collaboration with 33 creators across the world hired through an online freelance platform, and explores how human connection, labor, and identity adapt within the precarity of digital space.

Opening This week‼️ Community Media Lab is AAI’s new seasonal initiative transforming the passageway between the gallery and black box theater into a dedicated space for Philadelphia-based video and moving-image artists.

Community Media Lab’s inaugural feature is Rami George’s (Rami George) 𝙛𝙧𝙤𝙢 𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙮 𝙧𝙞𝙫𝙚𝙧 𝙩𝙤 𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙮 𝙨𝙚𝙖, a striking visual re-indexing of recent mass mobilizations for Palestine across the US. Join us this Friday (9/4), 6-9PM for the debut of Community Media Lab as well as AAI’s new Fall Exhibition opening, happening on the same night!

On Sunday, October 25 at 10AM, there will be a rare full-sound screening of the work, followed by a conversation between Rami George and artist-organizer Samantha Rise on archiving movements and the intersection of art and community organizing. Both the exhibition and the artist talk are presented as part of the citywide arts festival Collective Futures

Our new Fall Exhibition 𝐀𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐩𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲 𝟐.𝟎: 𝟗% 𝐆𝐫𝐢𝐧, 𝟑𝟑% 𝐆𝐫𝐨𝐨𝐯𝐞 opens NEXT FRIDAY (9/4) 6-9PM‼️

Led by artist Frank WANG Yefeng (Frank WANG Yefeng), the project transforms our main gallery with an immersive video sculpture. Recently named a New Talent in Art in America Magazine and recipient of the 2026 New York Artadia Award, Yefeng has exhibited internationally, with recent highlights including the Whitney Museum’s artport and The High Line’s High Line Originals program.

Have you spotted the pop-up sculptures and mural at The Rail Park? Students from our Youth Education Program collaborated on a public mural inspired by their mythological creation stories and characters. Six Philly-based artists then created artwork based on the students’ imaginative stories and creations! Come visit The Rail Park and check them out before the installation closes at the end of the month!

💥Enrollment is officially open for our Middle and High School Afterschool Programs! Students explore diverse arts practices through fun, hands-on workshops led by our incredible teaching artists while building a lasting community with their peers. We are so excited to be part of Collective Futures (Collective Futures)! This citywide festival takes place this fall, bringing together more than 40 artist-run spaces and community arts organizations across Philadelphia. As part of the festival, we will present 𝙍𝙖𝙢𝙞 𝙂𝙚𝙤𝙧𝙜𝙚: 𝙛𝙧𝙤𝙢 𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙮 𝙧𝙞𝙫𝙚𝙧 𝙩𝙤 𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙮 𝙨𝙚𝙖 (Rami George) in our newly launched Community Media Lab.

Born out of a deep disillusionment with the art world during a time of crisis, 𝙛𝙧𝙤𝙢 𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙮 𝙧𝙞𝙫𝙚𝙧 𝙩𝙤 𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙮 𝙨𝙚𝙖 (2026) is a vital, somatic re-indexing of the mass mobilizations for Palestine across the United States, specifically Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. Through inversions and layered digital manipulation, raw, handheld footage of public resistance is transformed into an experiential archive wherein the inverted footage of flags and flashes of police surveillance surrender to a new, unconditioned, and shocking vibrancy.

AAI’s Community Media Lab is our newly launched curatorial initiative dedicated to amplifying Philadelphia-based artists that cultivates communal resonance through the presentation of moving-image works.

Moving between collaboration and constraint, 𝐀𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐩𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲 𝟐.𝟎 explores how online networks create new possibilities for labor and connections while obscuring certain forms of subjectivity, authorship, and participation. Through a decentralized chain of image-making, the artist collaborated with 33 internet-based creators to produce portraits of himself, each shaped by the interpretations of others.

In conjunction with the opening reception for the exhibition, AAI will host a panel discussion featuring Lucas Blalock (LB) and Triton Mobley. Together, the artists will explore how the rapid development of technology continues to challenge established understandings of art and human experience, while examining how different experiences of producing art might contribute to rethinking technology today.

✨Come experience an incredible live music featuring NOMON (NOMON) at AAI next Thursday (8/6)! This electro-percussion duo of sisters will expand how percussion can speak, move, and connect. Driven by curiosity, the duo explores rhythm not only as sound, but as energy, gesture, and emotion, as they believe percussion can embody both structure and freedom, precision and vulnerability.

The show opens with Mikel Patrick Avery (Mikel Patrick Avery), a percussionist, composer/improvisor, filmmaker, photographer, and designer of electronic instruments, whose sound practice spans jazz, experimental, and electronic music. Mikel explores the uses of improvisation to navigate uncertainty, imagine alternative futures, and inspire social cohesion with a deep understanding of the historical and contemporary significance of various genres.

AAI’s OPEN HOUSE is next Saturday, August 1, 12–4 PM! We can’t wait to show you the newest additions to our rentable spaces: Project Space and Movement Space!

In our new Project Space, a unique, bi-level versatile space, we will present a pop-up exhibition featuring a local photographer:

✨ Alex Wong (Alex Wong 王斌摄影), who has spent more than a decade documenting everyday life through street photography in Philadelphia and across China. Guided by a philosophy he calls “Freetography,” Wong’s work embraces spontaneity, authenticity, and the quiet dignity of ordinary people, preserving fleeting moments of human connection and revealing the shared humanity that exists across cultures and communities.

Our new Movement Space is a dedicated area for diverse movement activities and rehearsals, perfect for dance, martial arts, yoga, and much more. We will feature two interactive activities:

✨ Joined by her cast for their upcoming show, Soul Searching, Geatali (geatali ☀️) will activate the Movement Space with a blend of choreographed dance and intuitive movement. For part of the session, the audience will be invited to join in the practice of intuitive movement!

✨ F**A Philadelphia (F**A Philly Capoeira) will lead a short demonstration of capoeira angola, during which group members will play instruments, sing, and play capoeira in pairs. Afterward, they will teach movements and music to participants.
