“My name is Ramiro Quiroga, I’m 29 years old and I am reaching out with hope and humility to ask for your support during one of the most difficult chapters of my life. Last year I was diagnosed and now living with end-stage kidney disease and I depend on dialysis three times a week to stay alive. While I am incredibly grateful for the treatment that keeps me going, dialysis is physically and emotionally exhausting. It affects every part of my daily life and has made it impossible for me to live the life I once knew.

Along with dialysis come ongoing medical expenses, medications, treatments, and other healthcare-related costs that continue to add up. Even with assistance, these expenses place a significant financial burden on me and my family.

Every donation, no matter the amount, will go toward helping cover medications, treatments, medical needs, transportation, and other essential expenses related to my care. I am also hoping to find a living kidney donor. A kidney transplant would give me the opportunity to regain my health, spend less time in hospitals and dialysis clinics, and have the chance to live a fuller, more independent life.

“My name is Taylor Crandell, and I am a 23-year-old woman living with kidney failure and waiting for a kidney transplant. Just last year, I was in my final semester of college working towards a teaching degree when my life suddenly changed.

My kidney failure was sudden and completely unexpected. I went to the hospital thinking I was simply dehydrated from the flu. Instead, I was admitted to the ER and told that my kidneys were failing. After being transferred to another hospital and admitted to the ICU, I was told that the uremic level in my blood was so high that I shouldn’t have even been conscious when I arrived. I was immediately started on emergency dialysis.

After finally being discharged, I continued dialysis at a center before transitioning to home hemodialysis. I chose home dialysis partly because it gave me the flexibility to finish college and work while also giving me more time to search for a living donor.

Kidney failure changed my life in ways I never expected, but it didn’t stop me from moving forward. I finished college and graduated, and I’m still working toward the life I had imagined for myself before my kidneys failed.

Now I’m searching for a living kidney donor. I am blood type O positive, and I am listed for transplant at UnityPoint Health – Iowa Methodist Transplant Center in Des Moines, Iowa.

I would be lying if I said I didn’t hope that sharing my story might eventually help me find my donor. I absolutely do hope that. But I also want people to know that living donation is possible. A donor doesn’t have to be a family member or someone who has known you for years. Sometimes, a stranger can be the person who changes your entire life.

I don’t know who my donor will be, or if I’ve met them yet. But I’m sharing my story in the hope that it reaches the person who needs to see it.”

“I have been searching for a living donor for over 3 years now. There are a few people who started testing, but they were all screened out for one reason or another. I appreciate that they made the effort. I have been running my own website and Instagram account for my search, but engagement has been limited. I teach at a community college, and my need for a kidney was brought up at a faculty senate meeting. I’m not sure anyone looked into donating to me from that effort - even with the advocacy of a colleague who has a transplant and another colleague who was a living donor.

I used to go camping with students who were in the Astronomy Club, but I haven’t had the energy to do that since my kidney health really went downhill about 5 years ago. I used to teach more classes and have more engagement with students, but I haven’t had the energy to be involved like I would like to since being listed for transplant. I am on peritoneal dialysis, so I have to spend many extra hours a week taking care of my catheter site and being hooked to the machine for treatments. Dialysis has helped, but I am still a lot more tired than I was before. It limits how much I can be there for Julia (my spouse), my pets, and my students.

I would like to have the energy to take on my share of our household tasks. I’m limited in how much I can lift or move because of my catheter site. Because of this, I can’t even set up my own telescope in the backyard. My spouse and I like to go rockhounding on beaches, but I can’t go as far or carry as much because of my condition. I want to get back to being able to travel easily with her — there’s so much to arrange with needing a clean space for doing dialysis. I want to be there for the people in my life that I love, and getting a kidney transplant will allow me to get back to doing so. I have family that I haven’t seen in person in years because of my kidney disease. I miss them”

“My name is Alexandria Howard, a 37-year old from St. Louis, Missouri, currently residing in Houston, TX. An avid traveler and huge fan of all things that sparkle, I was diagnosed with diabetes when I was 13. Over the last quarter of a century, the effects of this insidious disease have left their mark, from my vision (cataracts, glaucoma, & diabetic retinopathy), gastroparesis in my stomach, four amputations including below the knee of my left leg, and ESRD to name a few.
