"Collections lie at the heart of most museums, so naturally, values regarding the ownership and control of collections are central to museum ethics.
Recent developments at the global, national, and institutional level...suggest we may be at a tipping point regarding those values....to benchmark the progress of our sector...we need data."
—Elizabeth Merritt, Vice President, Strategic Foresight, and Founding Director, Center for the Future of Museums, American Alliance of Museums (AAM)
New on AAM's blog: Soleil Hawley and Kayla Kane from the Penn Cultural Heritage Center at Penn Museum shares how the newly-launched National Survey of Museum Collecting Practices can help inform the future of U.S. museum collecting practices.
The survey is open to any U.S.-based, nonprofit institution that collects or stewards cultural objects and self-identifies as a museum, library, or other collection.

Removing 100 years of grime 🤩
As we transform the long-awaited Egypt Galleries: Life and Afterlife, opening Dec. 12, the 's Conservation Team is working hard to get the artifacts ready to go on view!
You can see Museum Conservator Alexis North using a rigid agar gel with a pH-adjusted cleaning solution, specifically chosen to remove the 100+ years of grime without affecting the stone of this sarcophagus lid. The gel keeps the cleaning action right at the object's surface, not letting the solution pe*****te into the substrate. It acts like a sponge, drawing in the grime, so it can all be peeled away without having to rub or wipe the surface of the object at all.
🥳 100th anniversary BONUS! 🥳
