Why We Do What We Do
Founded for the purpose of fighting drugs and violent crime in our neighborhood, the Cleveland Street Community Center is dedicated to the loving memory of Keita T. Lacey (a.k.a. Tah-Tah). Born on January 6, 1976, in Philadelphia Keita was raised on Cleveland Street where his family resided for about twenty years. His mother, Irene Lacey, always had an open door for neighbors and children who needed extra care and attention; Tah modeled his mother’s kindness and sense of community. He was a generous man full of fun and laughter; a great brother, friend and son who inspired other men around the community. As one of the best barbers in North Philly, boys would come in the shop to laugh and talk as he worked. Tah had a positive outlook on life with a particular concern for children.

Unfortunately, as an innocent bystander, Tah’s life was cut short in the midst of a senseless drug shoot-out on December 4, 2000. He left behind a precious baby girl and a legacy of grace, kindness, intelligence and joy. In turn, we seek to honor his life and example by caring for the community which became such a part of his family and a part of his heart.
