Fiber Reimagined IV Artist Spotlight: Susanne Williams  Susanne Williams

Susanne Williams is a multidisciplinary artist whose work spans painting, ceramics, textiles, and sculptural forms made from reclaimed plastics. Her art is driven by curiosity, environmental themes, and a love of animals — especially cats and birds. Originally from Nebraska, she now lives and works in West Virginia.

Plastic persists. A byproduct of the petroleum industry, plastic is made to be disposable and forgettable, yet it can endure for centuries. Bridal gowns, on the other hand, symbolize vows,
permanence, and cultural traditions. This work draws a parallel between our relationship with plastic (oil) and the institution of marriage, whether it’s based on love, convenience, or something in between. It is a union from which we cannot divorce ourselves. By elevating plastic to a monumental status, Susanne encourages viewers to think about what we discard and what truly lasts.

Fiber Reimagined IV Artist Spotlight: Kid Kardiac the kid.

Kid Kardiac is a Memphis-based textile artist who has been focusing on defining their art voice over the past five years. This journey has since led to a multitude of opportunities, two of the most recent being showcased in the FACES exhibition at the Cincinnati Contemporary Arts Center, along with a residency through Crosstown Arts in Memphis. In 2022, she made the pivot from rug-making to a more fine-arts space, intertwining vibrant yarn with other textiles. Her primary focus is on preserving Black American culture by capturing moments from the physical world into art. Starting with her love of telling the stories that have been lost in the passage of time, while also highlighting key moments critical to the legacy of Black American culture, and curating a space for the longevity of those stories. As a native-born Memphian, she strives to bring those rich cultural moments to the community that has always been her home. The hope is that her artwork could spark curiosity refined in these moments to promote educational research.

Fiber Reimagined IV Artist Spotlight: Leisa Rich Leisa Rich

Leisa Rich’s creative journey began during a prolonged childhood hospital stay that led her to be deaf in one ear and hard-of-hearing in the other. These experiences led her to rely heavily on her other senses, providing alternative ways to understand the world. While in the hospital she found meaning in tactile activities: dressing a Barbie doll in clothes sewn by her mother and finger painting in the art room, and after she left the hospital, hosting tea parties for her bears and dolls beneath the enveloping, whispering branches of a weeping willow tree in her back yard, and crafting tiaras from bell wire in her father’s electrical shop.

This foundation shaped her ongoing pursuit to create visually and tactilely engaging artworks that stimulate the senses. 
As part of her art practice, Leisa develops installation environments offering temporary respite from contemporary life’s challenges, evoking the safe, wondrous feelings of childhood. Interactive elements invite viewer participation, sharing her vision of immersive, sensory worlds. A deep passion for hyper-tactility drives her, as does her commitment to the experimental manipulation of materials and techniques. This unabashed experimentation forms the core of her artistic process. She consistently challenges traditional boundaries, questions established norms and seeks new possibilities in form and expression to achieve authenticity and spontaneity. Her creativity is also seen in 2D wall-hung works, 3D sculptural forms and wearable sculpture. Gravers Lane Gallery shines the spotlight on artist Jan Morgen janice morgen

Recently, our gallery associate Rachael Forbes had the incredible opportunity to sit down with the artist in her home and studio. Jan’s work, of which primarily consists of large mixed-media pieces made of paper, gesso, oil paint, and wood, hold depths of thought and feeling. Her paintings serve as stories, telling the viewer of her life and humanity. The work is scarred, marred with mistakes, but filled with a depth of mystery, understanding, loss and sorrow.
