Each tour in Alaska has been unforgettable...most vivid memory is a private sea plane journey around 'Moira Sound' piloted by the local doctor and topped with eagle sightings and tea & coffee in delft porcelain. Then, northern lights flickering above chest-high snow that'd been carved through with walking paths...and a few feverish summer solstices with unending light, and 12 foot tides. The last visit (with Seamus Egan Project) included the coldest womens march ever. Solas goes to Alaska end of June, and I wonder if I'll see any of my old friends there?

Commissions provide an outlet for my quiet, muso-architectural brain to stew, build, deconstruct and reconstruct...this one, in celebration of an anniversary for this chorus was set in a landscape I could feel and see - crisp, sage & piñon fragranced air and birdsong ringing across the high desert tufts. I loved making a piano part though I had to practice extra to be able to play it in the premiere!
