Helping Hand Rescue Mission
Our mission is to turn obstacles into opportunities for Philly families in challenging situations

Sunday was a beautiful mess in Philly, one man slushed to the Helping Hand Mission with a desperate request as he walked in, “Socks.” We don’t take for granted that we have neighbors, friends, volunteers, and donors that have kept us open for 125+ years. Our food pantry, church, clothing closet, meals, and sock basket are an important part of the community, and Sunday was a solid reminder of the importance of the work.

Pastor Garrett was relentlessly hopeful, contagiously positive, and brought dynamic teaching and musical gifts into the community. Minister Milton Fox captured a great pic of our friend Sweet Baby Ray sharing a word of hope with our community guests. Ray is giving out devotionals, the jug in the background is collecting money for our Ugandan water project, and Brother Greg (in the background) is helping folks into our food pantry. A pic telling a story - spiritual needs, practical support, and our giving circle to pay it forward.

One of the many great things about the Helping Hand Rescue Mission is that our community serves from within. Mark is a glorious friend who has seen tough times, and now continues the giving circle by serving faithfully.

We are grateful for all of you that have donated, served, and prayed for our community this year. We gather for a meal at the Helping Hand Rescue Mission, but it leads to much more. Our visitors are working to get back on their feet, and you are helping turn obstacles into opportunities.

Article about our Pastor Tom Gallashaw
Spring Garden pastor who helped those in poverty is mourned and missed after dying of coronavirus Gallashaw’s hard-bark demeanor gave him a street authenticity that everyone recognized and respected when he exhorted them to do better, be better.

RIP Pastor Thomas Gallashaw (1949-2020)
If you've been to the Mission in the last 20 years, you have likely been greeted by an amazing man with a perfect laugh and an unmatched heart.
We grieve that we won't make any new memories with our guy, but we celebrate the ones we were blessed with.

Covid update: We continue to serve our weekly meals, have been able to open an emergency food bank, and have been distributing masks to the our homeless community.
We are so grateful for your support.
We are open because so many have shared with us along the way. Thank you, thank you.
