Annie Haslam’s tribute to Ed Sciaky last night at the Renaissance Farewell show at the Scottish Rite Auditorium. I just missed a little of the lead up to this. This is Scott Bluebond.

Rip Phil Lesh. When I saw you in San Francisco in 77 the first time, I knew the music of the Grateful Dead was dictated by your melodic, driving bass lines. I’ll miss you so!

Didn't know you were reviewing the show, Jordan Blum. Nicely done!

Vocalist Jon Anderson prides himself in being known as one of the "Band Geeks" 09/12/2024

Great interview

Vocalist Jon Anderson prides himself in being known as one of the "Band Geeks" The former Yes vocalist talks about his latest solo endeavor with the group Band Geeks.

Love Jon Anderson & the Band Geeks new album, True! I read over the lyrics before listening through today. They are the words of a man who knows he’s lived a full life. Jon will be 80 on Oct. 25. He shows his appreciation for his very happy long-time marriage to Jane (Thank You), has talked in interviews about walking with Chris Squire and Alan White (Still A Friend), and has written or co-written some soaring songs that burst through my speakers (Shine On and True Messenger). But it is on songs like Once Upon a Dream, True Messenger, Realization Part Two, and the beautiful Counties and Countries that Jon’s most potent messages come through.
In Counties, the only song Jon has a sole writing credit on, Jon sings “The Gardens of Eden are calling me home…The gift of creation are calling me home…I reached out and discovered that words are forever, never repeat what you don’t believe, and I said I would remember, that people forgiving, that comes with the loving of your soul…Just reaching for the strength of another, your sisters and brothers, calling me, calling me, calling me home…”
And so much more. Pretty heady lyrics as we are headed to Nov. 5.
Jon is one self actualized dude. He’s been through a near death experience, has been in and out of love, has been at the top of the music world and has had to find his niche at times, but has a deeply spiritual side that is part of parcel of all his work. I feel it deeply in this album, and credit to Richie Castellano: Band Geek and The Band Geeks for making it sound so much like a band effort even though this was mostly created over the internet while the band and Jon were 3,000 miles apart and is their only album. It sounds clean, punchy, modern, and still nostalgic.
Jon is appreciative of where he finds himself at this stage of his life. Touring can’t be easy at 80, but he will be back in the Philadelphia area September 13 and 15 at The Keswick Theatre. 🎭 I’ll be there, G-d willing, to support my guy. Richie Castellano Christopher J. Remembering All About Jazz's Dave Binder / John Kelman article @ All About Jazz 08/16/2024

This vacation has had its challenges to say the least. Yes, the beach and fine and fun restaurants were great. But in addition to the passing of my friend Barry Gutman, my journalist pal John Kelman passed away suddenly. John helped me land the interview for Jeff Berlin by Mike Jacobs that is contained in the All About Jazz story below. Scroll down and look for my photo with Pat Metheny. John, we never met but I loved you from afar. RIP my friend. No more rushing to the emergency room. William James

Steve Reich's Different Trains / Electric Counterpoint at 35
It was 35 years ago: the first recording of Steve Reich's Different Trains and Electric Counterpoint, performed by Kronos Quartet and Pat Metheny, respectively, was released on Nonesuch. "A work of such originality that 'breakthrough' seems the only possible description," the New York Times exclaimed of Different Trains, which went on to win the Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Composition. Pitchfork named the record one of the 200 Best Albums of the 1980s. Courtesy of NNonesuch RecordsPPat Metheny
