Ocotillo Elementary Students Build Their Own Society in ‘Cave Town’ | Carlsbad Current Argus The project sees students spend about 45 minutes each day building their own community within the school. They create their own local businesses, earn, spend or save their own money and elect public officials.

In MicroSociety, going to work, managing responsibilities, and showing up for your community become part of the school day.

Suddenly, an early dismissal can really interfere with your schedule!

Real-world learning sounds a little different around here.

A new menu drops and suddenly everyone wants to see what’s cooking.

Students in MicroSociety quickly discover that changing a product can change customer demand, create buzz, and sometimes result in a very long line!

Marketing, customer service, supply and demand… all happening right in the school day.

Many MicroSociety citizens hire and interview employees.

That means practicing communication, leadership, decision-making, and figuring out what makes someone a good fit for the job.

It’s one of the many ways students experience real responsibilities as part of their MicroSociety.

Kathy and Peter Lacey have donated $30,000 directly to the school’s MicroSociety in memory of Kathy’s father, longtime Red Deer entrepreneur Jack Donald.

“My parents always taught me that it was important to work hard and to always give something back. MicroSociety seemed like the perfect way to honour my dad,” Kathy told students at their recent swearing-in assembly.

We love seeing a community recognize the value of giving young people opportunities to learn about business, take on real responsibilities, and discover how they can contribute to the world around them.
