An Albatross

Gregg was a close friend & ally to our band. A couple of us from the An Albatross camp first crossed paths with him when he filled in on bass for an Ink & Dagger set at Wilkes-Barre Fest (c. 1997), later we caught him with Delta 72 supporting Rocket From the Crypt at the First Unitarian Church (c. 1998) & later we became friends with him as he & Eddie, Eddie’s brother, Mikey & Russ Alexander forged a psychedelic-soul monthly event in Philadelphia called Turnaround Vs. Immediate. Gregg had an influence on An Albatross in its overall aesthetic & presentation: 60’s Detroit by way of James Brown soul-freakout by way of early angular Rough Trade/No Wave tidbits. He was always an encouraging & inspirational figure that by proxy helped in the sonic sculpture & aural swirl of “We Are the Lazer Viking” & “Blessphemy.” His departure is a great loss for the global music community, particularly the Philadelphia music scene where much of his roots were embedded. We will miss you, brother.

Our debut LP turns 25 this year & fortunately it has just recently been made available on most streaming platforms, including our Bandcamp.

This record serves as a testament to the rapid changes occurring in the underground scene in the era; while certain songs reflect the 90’s proto-“screamo” sound that was prevalent in basements, VFW halls & non-traditional venues, others were heavy in syncopated rhythms & synthesizers: recalling movements past (like No Wave) & offering a peak into much of what was to come in the “aughts” of the underground.

Don‘t forget to remember The Truth.

Gieda III de An Albatross, se comienza a dar a conocer más a detalle lo que viene en la HARDCOLECCIÓN de REVENGE OF THE NERDS MX. 💭 El nuevo fanzine de REVENGE OF THE NERDS MX se llama HARDCOLECCIÓN FANZINES 1, 2 Y OTROS TEXTOS. Son más de 150 páginas en las que vienen artículos y crónicas de la historia del screamo en México, la canción de Reversal of Man que crítica a Earth Crisis, la carga punk que hay detrás de la película Huesera de Michelle Garza Cervera, la banda californiana y conformada por mujeres que no se sentía identificada con el movimiento feminista Riot Grrrl, el emo noventero y ñoño, las bandas de hardcore que marcaron a Cedric Bixler-Zavala en su etapa con At the Drive-In… Por otro lado, la publicación cuenta con entrevistas a grupos que ya son legendarios dentro del screamo a nivel mundial como Louise Cyphre; también hay charlas con personajes que se desenvolvieron en el ambiente del hardcore más underground y raro como Jayson Green (Orchid), Jamie Behar (Saetia y Off Minor), Mike Taylor (Pageninetynine) o hasta con el escritor Kiko Amat, quien resulta ser un abuelito del emo… La publicación igualmente tiene información de los primeros años del straight edge en la Ciudad de México, acerca de álbumes clásicos de punk rock mexicano o con el pasado hardcorero de artistas conocidos a nivel mundial como Steve Aoki, Zack de la Rocha o Moby… En cuanto a reseñas de grabaciones, hay datos de bandas proto emo y powerviolence, de sellos fundamentales como Ebullition Records, hardcore vanguardista y con el look de Spock de Star Trek, entre otras cosas. 📍 Quienes estén interesados en adquirir un ejemplar, favor de enviar mensaje.
