On Decoration Day in 1865, formerly enslaved people in Charleston honored soldiers who died for their freedom. That tribute grew into the Memorial Day we mark today.

They fought for a nation that still fails their dream. They did it anyway — because they knew only they could free themselves.

Today, only we can save us. There is no way to peace — peace is the way.
