We recently provided intake for 8 kittens who we knew tested positive for BOTH feline panleukopenia and calicivirus.

Normally, this is not something anyone would willingly do, but we saw a desperate plea for help for these kittens for days, and no one was able to help. Their veterinary bills were racking up(around 10k🫠) not only for being sick, but also because they had no place to go in order to be discharged. I lied awake each night thinking of them and hoping that I would scroll on Facebook and see an update that they were safe. It never came.

So what did I do? I went out and I purchased quarantine cages. I immediately ordered supplies. I stocked up on medication and fluids. Then I reached out.

Thanks to us, Stray Kitty Rescue , Rosie Fasciglione and a WONDERFUL temporary foster, these kittens are safe and are getting better slowly but surely.

But it doesn’t end here.

Panleukopenia is a highly contagious feline parvovirus that can be devastating, especially in young kittens. It attacks rapidly dividing cells, including those in the intestines and immune system, and can cause severe vomiting, diarrhea, dehydration, profound weakness, and even sudden death. The virus is extremely hardy and can survive in the environment for months to more than a year without proper disinfection.

Calicivirus is another highly contagious feline virus, commonly causing upper respiratory illness, mouth ulcers, fever, sneezing, congestion, drooling, and loss of appetite. Some strains can cause much more serious illness. It spreads through infected cats and contaminated objects, clothing, and hands.

And this means our normal cleaning routine simply isn’t enough.

We are currently completely disinfecting their cages and throwing out the entire contents TWICE A DAY, sometimes more, because these viruses are so contagious and difficult to eliminate. Bedding, litter, litter boxes, disposable supplies, toys, food items, and anything that cannot be safely disinfected has to go straight into the trash. The only thing that remains the same in the cages is a stainless steel water bowl that is completely cleaned and then disinfected, and the kitten.

We’re also trying desperately to give these babies the socialization and comfort they need while keeping our volunteers and the rest of the rescue population protected. We need PPE for the volunteers caring for and socializing these kittens.

With that being said, WE ARE DESPERATE FOR SUPPLIES!

We urgently need:

Disposable gloves
Disposable gowns/protective clothing
Heavy-duty trash bags
Paper towels
Disinfectant/Rescue cleaner/bleach
Disposable bedding/pads
Hand sanitizer
Cleaning supplies
Kitten-safe disposable supplies

Every single day we are going through an enormous amount of supplies just trying to keep these babies clean, comfortable, and alive. That means 4 disposable food trays for each of the 8 cats(one for dry, one for wet in both the morning and evening-32 food trays a day,) 2 disposable litter boxes WITH litter per cat(16 litter boxes with litter,) 2 puppy pad liners per cat(16 puppy pads,) 1 can of wet food per cat(half in the morning, half at night,8 cans,) 1/2 cup of dry food per cat(half in the morning, half at night or in Tiger’s case, 5 cups because he immediately knocks it over almost every time it goes in his cage🫠 so 5-10 cups of food a day,) and an extreme amount of dawn dish detergent, rescue cleaner, disposable syringes for each cat for medications that they get 3 times a day(around 50 syringes a day🙃,) paper towels and MORE.

It’s a lot of supplies and it’s a LOT of work. But we couldn’t leave these kittens without help, and we can’t risk the spread of this virus to any of our other rescue cats.

These kittens didn’t ask to be sick. They didn’t ask to be born outside. And they certainly didn’t ask to fight for their lives.

We’re going to keep fighting alongside them. But we cannot do it without you.

Our cleaning/disinfection protocols are being followed with veterinary guidance. Panleukopenia requires particularly stringent environmental control because of how long the virus can persist.

Poco i Loco :)

Two male black kitties about 12 - 14 weeks old they were found in a backyard alley with a brother who did not make it and a mama who left. They have been dewormed, flea treated, and had initial vaccines. We would like to ask the community to foster these babies while they go through their most important surgery!

They are very sweet and Loco is special needs. How? He has wobbly cat syndrome (cerebellar hypoplasia) so he wobbles a bit when he walks. No medication is required but he is naturally out of balance.

Right now Poco and Loco have John as their temporary foster but they need a permanent place to crash!

NEW KITTY ALERT
I'm Roxy! I was found by your local neighbor Alexa in Fairmount/Francisville Philadelphia. She took me to VEG ER for Pets bc she was worried I was injured and lost! Luckily my overall checkup was healthy.

Her roomies bf is taking care of me while I find a foster but I need a more permanent foster bc he did his best!.

Slight change in usual content to celebrate Smoky... Smoky turned 3 years old this past week! It's crazy to think about the fact that he's already 3 years old. It feels like just yesterday and also a lifetime ago that I took this tiny little gray speck of dust cat with me knowing nothing about owning a cat or pets.  I have always had a deep love and affection for animals and I always wanted a pet as a kid. Every chance I could get to see animals or interact with them I would take. I have always loved nature documentaries because Im enamored with all the different ways animals could look, act, and sound. I remember once, when I was a teenager, I was walking home after Friday night shabbat services to meet up with my Mom to walk to our Friday night meal when I heard squeaking coming from a shrub next to someone's driveway. The tiniest kitten you've ever seen walked up to me and crawled up onto the toes of my shoe, where it fit in its entirety. Not knowing what to do, I made my friend who I was with wait there while I ran to get my Mom. I adamantly told her I will NOT go to this dinner until we figured out what we can do with this kitten because I would not leave it there. My Mom, seeing how much I cared and the conviction in my face, walked with me to our "local cat lady". The three of us walked over to the kitten and she confidently scooped it up, brought it home, and eventually got her adopted. For as long as I can remember, I’ve craved connection to animals and always wanted one to call my own. Growing up, I was desperate to have a pet. My brother and I would relentlessly beg our parents to adopt some sort of pet. We wanted a dog more than anything but would have even settled for a fish. The answer was always no. Despite my parents’ dogmatic refusal to adopt a pet, they always allowed me to babysit other people's pets and bring them into our home. My Mom’s stance was that if we got a pet to keep, she would be the one who would inevitably take care of it. Continued down in the comments... 👇🏻
