We removed the existing windows, opened up the exterior wall, reframed the opening, and installed these new double French doors to completely change the access to the backyard.

We properly weatherproofed the new opening and finished it off with PVC trim for a clean, long-lasting finish. The homeowner will be building a new deck and installing siding on the exterior, as well as handling the interior painting to complete the project.

Sometimes one change can completely transform a space.

I usually post the before & afters, but this time I wanted to show some of the work that goes on behind the tile. 💧🔨

Everyone sees the finished bathroom, but they don’t always see all the steps it takes to make sure that shower is properly waterproofed before a single tile goes up.

Are you using the correct size trowel?
Are you using the proper mortar?
Are you leaving the required gaps between GoBoard panels?
Is the Schluter membrane installed correctly?
Are you checking for proper mortar coverage?
Was the shower pan installed and waterproofed correctly?
Are all seams, corners, penetrations, and fasteners properly sealed?

And those are only some of the steps.

A bathroom can look beautiful when it’s finished, but if the waterproofing behind the tile wasn’t done correctly, you could end up with leaks, mold, damaged framing, and a very expensive repair down the road.

When hiring a contractor, make sure they aren’t skipping the steps you can’t see once the tile is installed.

For this project, we:
🔨 Demoed the existing hardwood flooring in the living room
🔨 Removed the tile flooring in the kitchen
🔨 Removed the carpet from the steps
🪵 Installed new laminate flooring throughout
🪚 Installed new quarter round
✨ Sanded down and refinished the staircase

The first stain on the steps didn’t turn out the way we expected, so we came back, sanded everything down again, and applied a new stain to get it right. We’re currently waiting on updated photos from the homeowner to show off the final results!
