Confederate Surrender Day (April 9, 1865) marks the day General Robert E. Lee surrendered the Army of Northern Virginia to Union General Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Court House, Virginia. This event effectively ended the Civil War, allowing soldiers to return home after signing parole terms, although other armies later surrendered.
