This year, Governor Josh Shapiro has officially proclaimed April as Autism Acceptance Month in Pennsylvania, reinforcing the importance of inclusivity, understanding, and support for individuals with Autism and their families.

Governor Shapiro stated:

“In recognition of the many accomplishments and contributions made by those with developmental disabilities, I encourage all Pennsylvanians to support those with a developmental disability and their families in all aspects of community life.”

Autism is a spectrum, meaning each person experiences it differently. Some may require minimal support while others require 24/7 care.

The event will feature a day of conversation and collaboration to better support autistic individuals across the justice system. Here the perspectives and experiences of autistic self-advocates and learn practical tools and strategies from justice-related professionals.

GROUP HOME WORKER ACCUSED OF ‘EXCESSIVELY BATTERING’ AUTISTIC CHILD: Shannon Cooper, a 38-year-old employee at a Florida group home, has been arrested and accused of child abuse. Deputies got reports of child abuse at a group home after the father of a non-verbal autistic child noticed he had multiple injuries. Detectives watched a video that reportedly showed Cooper “excessively battering” the child. In the video, Cooper is reportedly seen pulling the child around by their collar, hitting them several times, straddling the child and putting her weight upon them, throwing the child into furniture, and taking the victim into rooms that she thought didn't have cameras. Detectives also noted that the child had bruising on their neck, right and left arms, and scratches on their hand and face.
