Happy Pride from The Community Grocer! This June and every month, we are proud to celebrate the strength, love, resilience, and beauty of the LGBTQ+ community.

Over the last month our team has accomplished some major construction milestones, celebrated partnerships from soil to supper, and continued to serve our community in preparation for our upcoming launch in the coming months.

5 years ago we set out on a mission to build the store of our dreams to make eating well easier for all. With your support, we are bringing that dream to reality.

Construction updates on 60th Street 🧱🔨:

Door installation has been completed, framing and rough-in inspections passed, & crews are working through the weekend to finish insulation before next week to begin drywalling and floor installation. The finish line is in sight 🏁

This is what intentional food system partnership looks like.

When we learned that our friends and suppliers lost one of their hoop houses last winter, we jumped into action.

We deployed philanthropic capital from to rebuild the hoop house; ensuring a consistent supply of regenerative, organic, local produce for The Community Grocer through the winter months.

FMC didn’t stop there. They joined the TCG and Farmer Jawn teams on the farm to build the hoop house together, and have since funded educational farm trips so our neighbors can meet the farmer, the land, and the people behind the food on our shelves.

And Farmer Jawn didn’t stop there either. As the hoop house came back online, they made a commitment to supply TCG with produce free of charge until the full value of the investment is paid back in food.

Capital in. Produce out. Community fed. This is what it looks like to build with intention, with care, and with community 💚

About last week…

- Our team flew to Chicago to kick off the Abbvie Foundation’s Health Equity Accelerator. Selected as 1/6 organizations nationally, we are spending the next 10 weeks with the team to accelerate our health equity programming as we work to make eating well easier for all 💚

- We launched our first breakfast meal samples; collard greens frittatas with crispy potatoes and a farm fresh tomato jam. As we finalize our product offering in the coming weeks we are garnering and taking in community feedback every step of the way 🍳

- Our friends and sponsors at stopped by the kitchen to plan out our coffee service, discuss the future of our GroceryRx program (announcements coming soon), and the buildout of our community space on the second floor ☕️

🛒 Big news from our team.

Our Co-Founder & President Eli Moraru will be presenting at the Grocery Retail for All Summit in Chicago this June, sharing a stage with some of the most important leaders in grocery retail, food policy, and community finance in the country.

The conversation he’ll be part of is one we live every day: how do you actually finance community grocery retail? What does real innovation look like when the market has already written your neighborhood off?

We’re building TCG in West Philadelphia right now with construction underway and doors opening soon. We believe the answer exists. But it’s hard. The tools weren’t built for what we’re trying to do, and the communities that need it most are the ones the traditional system leaves behind.
That’s exactly why rooms like this matter. And we’re honored to be in one.
