Happy Full Snow Moon, or Full Bear Moon, or Full Black Bear Moon 🌕

I actually finished one of my full moon illustrations in time for the moon it's describing! This will probably be the only one all year! 😂

This vibrant public artwork will celebrate coexistence with urban wildlife and the beauty of the wild neighbors who share our city. Alison’s bold, nature-inspired illustrations bring this vision to life in a way that invites curiosity, care, and connection.

Landvaettir, in Norse myths, are spirits that live in natural areas and protect them. They can bless or curse you. I have always walked around in the woods, or in the fields where I grew up, feeling like I was in good company when I was the only physical being around. There's not much that can explain that feeling, at least in lay terms. Its comforting to me, especially in times of real world chaos, to turn to the myths of cultures much older than mine. Its not exactly the "simpler times" mentality, and I have never subscribed to the mindset that, hundreds or thousands of years ago, people were just "not as intelligent", and therefore believed in the unbelievable. 🌲 The land, for now, is a constant thing. Its quiet fills my mind with good noise. I go outside and put my hands on the ground, on trees, and close my eyes. Maybe the landvaettir are listening, touching back, sending what I hope are blessings. I don't pray, but I made this little painting in the closest thing to prayer. Go put your hands on the earth, if you're feeling hopeless right now. The land spirits, and I, are sending you love.

"Finding the Way In", Gouache on paper, 2020.

Over the years, I've gone back to find those secret little paths in the woods and through the fields, the ones we traversed daily as kids; they're overgrown, they look different, or possibly, they look the way they always did, I just can't figure out how we ever found our way in. But I remember it being so simple; the entrances were obvious to me then. Maybe I'm too big now. Still, whenever I have those little moments in the right places, I can't help myself but to try to find my way back in.

A new small original is up in my shop (pictured) along with 2 other older prints that, once they're gone, they're gone from my shop forever!

This commission of wild edible plants is on it's way to its patron, the head chef of @jaxonbyob . My first composition like this, and my first time using 300 lb hot press watercolor paper (huge learning curve), I had a lot of fun with this one. 🌿 Clockwise from 12 o'clock -- Common chickweed (Stellaria media), Black Cherry (Prunus serotina), Wild Leek/Ramp (Allium tricoccum), Lotus (Nelumbo lutea), Bolete (Phylloporus spp), Yellow Wood Sorrel (Oxalis stricta). And I feel like I have to say this, please dont use this post as a reference for your own wild foraging trips. Please get field guides and do research on good foraging practices first. Have you ever heard the song of a Wood Thrush? It's beautiful. It's a call that threads itself through the trees, from deep in the brush, sounding like a woodwind. Usually heard but not seen (I've definitely only heard them) this bird has always been mysterious to me, like a spirit of the forest. 🌿 I just listed this original in my Etsy shop, link in bio.
