How to retain your drivers?

Besides increasing their pay, one way is to ask your drivers. Occasionally make anonymous questionnaires, ask them how happy they are, what they like and don't, let them make suggestions. After you get this information, do your best to make those changes, or address clearly what you cannot do and why. Transparent communication can go a long way.

In addition, know their expectations before they start working - if they want to spend weekends with their family, don't make them choose between family and work.

Take care of their health. CDC reports that long-haul truck drivers are twice as likely as non-truckers to be obese and smoke, which lead to serious health complications. Offer them gym memberships, give financial incentives to drivers to quit smoking or lose specific amount of weight.

Lastly, take care of their mental health. Long hours on the road with nobody to socialize with could affect their mental health or even lead to depression, so offer them free therapy sessions.

How to find new drivers ?

Recently, American Transportation Research Institute has ranked the driver shortage for trucks as a top 1 issue in its "Top Industrial Issues" list. So, how do you find drivers in such challenging times ?

There are several ways for it, which work best when combined together. Creating your web-site is one way to tell the world about your company, increase its digital presence and, of course, attract drivers. The second method is leveraging social media, as every driver spends a considerable amount of time-consuming content on Instagram and Facebook during stays for loading or their time off the wheel. So, creating a digital presence and utilizing targeted ads can easily expose you to drivers and attract their attention. Another option is posting job ads on job boards. And the last one is using incentives such as an employee referral program, i.e offering financial rewards to your employees, who bring new drivers that pass all your criteria and get hired.

The American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI) has started working on its annual report "Operational Costs of Trucking". They collect data both from trucking fleets, and owner operators. The report is considered a key benchmarking tool used for various evaluation purposes by motor carriers of all sizes.
This year, ATRI is offering customized reports to all its participants, comparing their operational costs to those of competitors of the same size and sector.
The survey form will be open for all interested parties until May 13, 2022.
