Laborers In the Harvest

Do you love Jesus, or do you just love Him when He agrees with you?
It’s easy to call Jesus Lord when His will and our will are walking in the same direction. The struggle begins when they collide.
That’s when we start negotiating.
“God knows my heart.”
“My situation is different.”
“I know what the Bible says, but...”
In this Week 7 message from FOLLOW: Learning to Walk With Jesus, we confront what Jesus says in John 14:15:
“If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.”
What happens when Jesus tells you to forgive someone who hurt you, love someone you don’t even like, surrender something you enjoy, or trust Him when you want control?
Through John 14:15 to 24, we’ll look at why love for Jesus moves us toward obedience, why struggling to obey doesn’t automatically mean that our love for Him is fake, and why Jesus gives us the Holy Spirit, the Helper, rather than leaving us to follow Him in our own strength.
Then we go to the Garden of Gethsemane, where Jesus faced the struggle between desire and obedience and prayed:
“Yet not My will, but Yours be done.” Luke 22:42
Because ultimately the question is simple:
When your will and God’s will collide, who gets the final word?
And the gospel reminds us that Jesus isn’t simply our example of obedience. He is our Savior. The One who calls us to obey is the same Jesus who went to the cross for our disobedience and rose again.

Which line hit you?

What if you have spent years learning about Jesus without actually becoming more like Jesus?
In Matthew 11:28 to 30, Jesus gives us an invitation:
“Come to Me.”
“Take My yoke upon you.”
“Learn from Me.”
We often recognize something in ourselves that does not look like Jesus and immediately decide to try harder. More discipline. More willpower. More effort.
But changing our behavior is not necessarily the same thing as changing our heart.
Jesus never called us to manufacture Christlikeness in our own strength. He called us to come to Him, take His yoke, learn from Him, remain in Him, and walk with Him.
The goal of every disciple is to become like the Teacher. And the good news is that the Teacher did not remain in the grave.
The Teacher lives!

Can you follow Jesus for years and still stop growing?

Sometimes the danger is not that we stop doing Christian things. It is that we become so good at doing them that we slowly stop depending on Christ.

In Remain, we look at John 15 and Jesus’ words, “I am the vine, you are the branches.” No matter how much we grow, how much we know, or how long we have followed Him, the branch never outgrows the Vine.

This first Sunday, we will also celebrate Communion together as we make one simple confession:

Jesus, I still need You.
