New production reference blocks and tape width gauges for Studer machines are now in stock. Modeled after original Studer parts. The reference block is 41.05mm tall, equivalent to the distance from the milled surfaces of a Studer transport casting to the bottom edge of the tape. Tape width gauges are machined to match the actual cut width of magnetic tape - 6.25, 12.65, 25.35 and 50.75 mm.

I normally don’t do this…

I never lay on my back to fix tape recorders, they’re not cars or sinks. But on this rarest of occasions I decided to insert my head into the belly of this 8-Track M56 and have a look around the back side of the bias amplifier bay. And to my distaste this process helped in finding the fault at hand (see 2 & 3).

Never again.

My response to the news of MRL closing at the end of 2023 is to push and share documents relating to the production of reference tapes. Hopefully those interested in using test tapes or even continuing the MRL tradition will follow the advices of tape recording's previous generation. Contact me directly (email) for a dozen articles on the topic.

It’s exciting to finally have replacement feet for the Otari MX-5050. I’ve turned over a dozen 5050s in recent years with only a fraction having original plastic feet. No more rubber bumpers or makeshift solutions. Up on eBay for whenever you need them.
