Hello Everyone,

I am an OT student and I am trying to work with an individual with cerebral palsy who drools and only has one upper extremity function. He is working at a hospital and per hospital requirements, he has to wear a paper mask. Because of his drooling issues, his mask gets wet often. Does anyone have any tips on how to help this individual?
Reese’s had his last OT session with Ms. Jesssica today. 😊❤️

Jaime tried you get a picture but Reese wanted to keep going. We will miss Tuesdays with Jessica. She showed our boy so much love and always made the hard work fun for him these past 7 months.

On a happier note, Ms. Leigh starts back soon! 💞🤗 We missed you!

BIG thanks to our little therapy family at OT Connection. We are so fortunate to have found you all.

When we first arrived to the evaluation with our 9 month old that couldn’t lift his arms off the mat (hypotonia), I was carrying uncertainty and fear.

We couldn’t have dreamed how far Reese would come with therapy and that the JOURNEY would be so positive, so rewarding, so educational and a place we ENJOY spending time. Thanks SO MUCH to all of the staff and therapists!!! ❤️

Special thanks to Cindy for leading our therapy journey these past 19 months. Cindy has shown love and support for our LO but also me. Thanks for all your support.
Cindy ❤

Breath production is important for a variety of human functions, especially speech! Breath flow powers our voice for conversations and is required for different lengths of time depending on the speech sound. The “k” and “g” sounds require little airflow, while the “s” sound requires a long, continuous flow of air. A favorite way our speech team likes to target this is by asking the kiddo to blow a pinwheel! This serves as a great motivator because it’s fun, and it provides visual feedback for the kiddo! If it’s spinning, they have good, strong airflow. #speechtherapy

Using a ladder to work on alternating legs is another great way to get better at climbing stairs and to work on symmetrical leg strength. We see lots of kiddos who come into the clinic climbing the ladder with one leg leading, and we love to incorporate the ladder into obstacle courses to work on emphasizing the reciprocal pattern needed for stairs (and walking/running!)

When we don't get to spend a lot of time out of infancy on our tummies, superman poses can help us continue to strengthen our core. Working on our back and hip extensors can be difficult, and here we have a couple friends enjoying our Splash Week slide by playing superman while sliding down and holding it long enough to strike a pose at the end!

Did you know that writing on a vertical surface improves wrist extension and can improve pencil grasp? Try using chalk on your fence or taping paper to the wall to utilize this strategy at home. #occupationaltherapy

We are working hard identifying emotions utilizing the Zones of Regulation Program. The Zones Program is a cognitive-behavioral approach used to teach us how to regulate our feelings, energy, and sensory needs to meet the demands of the situation around us and to be socially successful. The goal of the Zones Program is to manage our emotions to get to a healthy place when circumstances test our limits. What zone are you in? #occupationaltherapy

Holding a squat position can be great for working on our leg strength, but it sure can be hard work. There are lots of activities that can be done with our arms to make holding these poses more fun. Our friend here had a blast holding her squat while splashing other friends with water as they came down the slide!

A great motivating language activity is using ping pong balls (found these at the Target dollar spot) and a piece of paper. You can make a tube or ramp and target vocabulary such as: ball, paper, help, go, fast, uh-oh, in, out, more. #speechtherapy

Working on our lower body strengthening today with sit-to-stands. Making sure to lean forward and engage our leg muscles properly!
Ways to make this exercise harder?
-Pick a lower surface
-Add weights (we used ankle weights here!)
-Do more repetitions
-Add in a jump at the top of the movement

Strong legs help with jumping, climbing stairs, getting up from the ground, and all your higher-level gross motor milestones. How are you strengthening your legs today?

Imitation is a HUGE part of language development! Before a child can begin imitating words, we work on gross motor imitation such as jumping. We then move towards more fine motor imitation and even copying facial expressions. Once those skills are mastered, we work towards verbal imitation of animal/environmental sounds and then finally, WORDS! #speechtherapy

Many of our friends love working with dinosaurs. Whether it is having stuffed dinosaurs complete our obstacle courses with us, dinosaur puzzles to help us keep track of exercise reps, or just getting to hang out with a brachiosaurus while we are standing on one foot, we have lots of ways dinosaurs can help us make therapy more fun! #physicaltherapy

Who doesn't love going through the car wash? Driving our cars works on our leg strength and specifically targets our hamstrings driving forward and our quads when we back up. Our quick, do-it-yourself car wash with PVC pipes is a favorite of Splash Week every year.

Lion in My Way (formerly Obstacles) by Eeboo games is a favorite game of one of our speech therapists!

Kids have to be creative to think about how to overcome silly obstacles (like a lion) using random objects (like a catapult or a PB&J).

Don't have this game? Try incorporating this idea into your play-- place an animal on your child's train track and ask "what are we going to do??!!" Encourage them to be creative with their solutions! #speechtherapy

We made a sensory bin in occupational therapy using colored rice and spices for scent! Dying rice is a fun activity for kids working on multi-step tasks and can be done quickly by mixing food dye and hand sanitizer and coating the rice with it. Once it's done, a rice bin is a great calming tool and can provide hours of play that helps develops fine motor skills and hand eye coordination!
