Dirt, from anywhere and everywhere, has what is called a “seed bank.” it’s basically the dormant seeds that exist within the dirt, which can lay dormant for years.

Crabgrass, for example, dies in the fall and drops seeds, which stay dormant until Spring, hence why pre-emergents are highly recommended in springtime.

It takes time to slowly reduce dirt’s seed bank by systematically killing, or pre-killing, weeds as they come up through the dirt each season. It’s unavoidable weeds are going to grow, and you should expect to stick to a set turf plan for about three to four years before you can stop applying pre-emergents, nitrogen, and post-emergents while maintaining a thick, dark green yard.

There’s always something to clean up or remove before beginning the actual work 😩 (at least there wasn’t anything to put back after I finished…), BUT who doesn’t like tearing stuff out?!?

On a serious note, if you dig beyond grade, take the time to backfill and compact so settling doesn’t cause issues in the future.

My first above ground pool dig… In retrospect, I don’t know why I thought this would only take half a day when I knew I was going to haul off thirty tons of dirt and was working by myself 😭 and when you’re working in those last weeeee hours of a day that should have been over hours ago, your attention to detail and patience starts to slip (P.S. we stayed within margin of error on our grade).

Why go the extra mile?

This was the last corner to rock and the project would be done. Everything had gone incredibly well, and I didn't want to jeopardize what was otherwise a perfect project.

I could imagine some of the gravel falling into this window well, which is not ideal, and we had a few of these pavers on hand, so I rigged up a decent looking border. It took about 30 minutes and was well worth the effort.

Our business named kinda sucked.

"RGAS - Residential Grading and Services." Whoever came up with it must've been short-sighted 😆

First, why limit yourself to residential projects?

Second, what does "and services" even mean? It's incredibly vague while "grading" is so specific. Are the services specific to grading? I'd think so!

And, RGAS has grown to become more than just a grading and lawn care provider. So, I've been working on rebranding to something that better reflects the services I currently and hope to provide, and my designer is coming through for us!

So, basically, we play in the dirt... and play with things that grow in the dirt, or sit on the dirt...

✅ Excavation, such as grading, gravel driveways, swales, seeding, landscape beds, digging a big ole' hole for whatever reason, stump removal, etc.
✅ Landscaping, such as lawn care, seeding, Spring and Fall maintenance, yard drainage, bed maintenance, storm cleanup, etc.

Additionally, by Spring of 2026, we'll be adding arborist services, such as tree trimming and felling, as well as rock and block wall installation!

Thank you for your patronage and I hope to continue to serve not just my customers but the industries.

Starting this business has fostered a huge respect for blue collar workers, and I hope to continue showing that by recording the detail and work required to sdo things right and to do the things most people don't want to do.
