World Cup Short Track story of the men’s race:
With the formidable Forissier brothers not lining up in Oak Mountain, the favorite for the fast-format men’s race was anybody’s pick. Maxim Chane started as the highest ranked, but also had less time between the tape in World Cup racing in recent times. The Italians Michele Bonacina and Federico Spinazzè had all the World Cup racing experience and their eyes on the podium, but they’d also have some new names to contend with as the likes of American Junior Champion Lucas Wright earned himself a wildcard entry into the race.
At the gun, the wildcard immediately got to work, opening up a gap at the front and exiting the water 11 seconds ahead of a tight chase pack consisting of Michele Bonacina, Federico Spinazzè, and the USA’s Charlie Smoak and Reed Legg.
While the junior champion made his statement in the water, he wasn’t able to hold it on the bike where things started to change. The relatively unknown Reed Legg, making just his second elite start, put down a statement of a ride to take the fastest bike split and open up the opportunity for a first elite win with a ride a full 38 seconds faster than the rest of the field. Nicolas Dure put down the second fastest time to put himself back in the race, while Maxim Chane found his way into the leading pack with a strong ride from the Frenchman.
Dure put in a blistering run of 00:09:23 to take the fastest split and close the gap, but Legg had already done enough damage on the bike. In front of the home crowd, Legg took his first elite win and his first World Cup gold. Duré finished 2nd to make it 3 podiums from 4 stops in the series so far, with Bonacina just 4 seconds behind to take 3rd.
Tanks will be completely empty after that. Recovery now becomes the name of the game before they line up again for Sunday’s Full Distance.

World Cup Short Track story of the women’s race:
This was just the second fast-format of the series, and it came with the added points of a regional championship. It also brought out a number of speedsters with their eyes on the maximum 90 points, including Isla Hedley and Emma Ducreux, who have both taken gold already this season.
At the sound of the gun, Hedley and Ducreux both got to work in their strongest discipline. Hedley took the lead up front to be the first out of the water in 00:05:33, with Ducreux just 3 seconds back. America’s Amanda Felder got the crowd cheering as she exited in 3rd, while the reigning World Cup champion Marta Menditto left herself some work to be done in 6th.
On the bike, Hedley didn’t give an inch. The Brit locked in the fastest split of the day in 00:19:18 to keep her place at the front. But it was on two wheels where Australia’s Hannah-Lee Young and Marta Menditto changed the shape of the race. A power performance from Young saw her put in the second fastest ride of the day as the opportunity for a first-ever podium started to grow, while Menditto carved through the field to make her way into the lead pack.
In the final leg, Menditto did what she does best on her feet and laid down the fastest run to put the pressure on the lead. But it was never enough to worry Hedley, who had carved out a lead just shy of a full minute. Hedley finished with ease to make it 3 golds in a row. Menditto keeps her place near the top of the leaderboard with a strong 2nd, while Young will be celebrating her first ever World Cup podium.
The pros now take a day’s break to recover, before going to battle once again in Sunday’s Full Distance.

USA’s Reed Legg takes the top step in just his second-ever XTERRA Short Track and fourth XTERRA Elite start, stopping the clock in a blistering 32:14 while posting the fastest bike split of the day.
Second place went to France’s Nicolas Duré, 50 seconds behind Legg’s winning time, with the Frenchman also posting the fastest run split of the day. Italy’s swim speedster Michele Bonacina rounded out the podium just 4 seconds behind Duré while recording the 2nd fastest swim split of the day.
