Music, dance, cuddles, and so much joy! 🎶 Here are a few moments from earlier today during our offsite Music Together® class in Cold Spring at Move.

There’s real magic in placing an instrument in a young child’s hands. When toddlers shake an egg, tap a drum, or jingle a bell, they’re doing so much more than making noise—they’re building neural connections, strengthening fine motor skills, and learning cause and effect (I made that sound!). Early exposure to instruments supports rhythm, listening, language development, and even the foundations for math, all while little ones are simply playing.

And it’s not about raising tiny virtuosos. It’s about exploration—letting children discover sound, feel a beat in their bodies, and experience the joy of making music alongside the grownups they love. Those early, hands-on musical moments lay groundwork that lasts a lifetime.

Today was full of exactly that: exploring, moving, snuggling, and making music together. 💛

As Mental Health Awareness Month comes to a close, here’s a gentle reminder that music can be more than something cute in the background.

For toddlers, singing, dancing, rhythm, and musical play can support emotional expression, language, confidence, social connection, and the very important art of getting big feelings out through tiny moving bodies.

For parents and caregivers, music can also become a shared reset button: a way to connect, co-regulate, laugh, breathe, and be present together, even on the days when everyone is running on crumbs and mystery backpack snacks.

Pictured above, our little musicians are finding creative ways to use drumsticks, from turning them into antlers, to teeth, to whatever else their imaginations decide next. That kind of playful pretend work is part of the magic. It helps children build creativity, flexible thinking, emotional expression, and confidence while learning through movement and music.

At Peek-a-Boo Family Music, we love seeing how Music Together® classes create space for joy, bonding, imagination, rhythm, and connection between children and the grown-ups who love them.

In motion with Reanna in Croton. 🎶

Fun fact: the roots of toddler music and movement classes go way back to the 1800s.

In 1837, German educator Friedrich Froebel opened one of the first kindergartens, built around the idea that young children learn through play, movement, nature, songs, stories, and hands-on discovery.

A few years later, in 1844, he published Mother-Play and Nursery Songs, which included songs, rhymes, finger plays, and movement games for families to share with little ones.

So when children are clapping, bouncing, pretending, singing, and moving through class, they are part of a very old and beautiful tradition:

learning through the whole body. 🎵

Parent tip: Music at home does not have to be complicated. 🎶

After your 45-minute Music Together® class, try choosing one simple “music moment” to repeat during the week.

Dance to your favorite song while making breakfast.
Sing one of your class songs in the car.
Tap a beat while waiting in line.
Make up a silly lyric while getting shoes on.
Let your child see you enjoying music, even if you do not think you are a “good” singer or dancer.

Little ones learn so much through imitation, repetition, and connection. When they see you finding joy in music, they begin to understand that music is not just something that happens in class.

It is something they can carry into everyday life.

Play is brain-building. ✨

Research shows that when young children clap, wiggle, echo sounds, pretend, take turns, and explore rhythm, they are not “just having fun.” They are practicing focus, memory, language, social connection, emotional regulation, problem-solving, and creativity.

That is the magic at the heart of Peekaboo Music and Music Together® classes. We create a playful musical space where toddlers and young children can learn through movement, rhythm, imagination, connection, and joyful repetition.

Captured here in class with Reanna at our Croton location, these small playful moments are exactly where creativity starts to grow.

Happy National Drawing Day from Peekaboo Music!

Today, we’re celebrating the creativity growing on our Wall of Fame artwork display, featuring beautiful work created by our Peekaboo Music students during class.

At Peekaboo Music, a proud Music Together®-affiliated program, we know that music education is never only about sound. Young children learn through the whole body and the whole imagination. When they sing, move, listen, draw, and share what they created, they are building connections across rhythm, language, memory, motor skills, emotional expression, and creative confidence.

Incorporating drawing into music lessons gives children another way to process what they hear and feel. A melody can become a shape. A rhythm can become a pattern. A song can become a picture. These moments help children understand that creativity does not live in one place. It can move from the voice, to the hands, to the body, to the page.

Just as important is what happens when a child brings their artwork to a teacher and says, “Look what I made.” When we pause, look closely, ask thoughtful questions, and validate their effort, we are helping that child feel seen. That kind of attention teaches them that their ideas matter, their expression has value, and their creative voice is worth sharing.

We are so proud of our young artists, musicians, movers, and makers, and we love seeing all the layers of creativity they bring into the classroom.
