The wildlife are active right now at Serpent Mound State Memorial.
🚨This is a yearly PSA for site visitors.🚨
It's okay to admire the wildlife you may see while visiting, but please don't touch or move the wildlife.
We ask that you don't get in their space. You may take a brief look or picture from afar and then we ask you leave them be.
Female deer intentionally hide their newborn fawns in tall grass or brush. Because fawns are born mostly scentless and have spotted coats for camouflage, staying motionless is their best defense against predators. The mother is usually nearby foraging and will return periodically to nurse.
If you spot a baby deer bedding down in tall grass, follow these simple steps to ensure its safety.
Don't touch or move it - Human scent can cause a mother to reject her fawn, and handling them is highly stressful for the baby.
Back away quietly - Leave the area so the mother feels safe enough to return.
Keep pets away - keep dogs on a leash while visiting and please keep them away from our wildlife as well.
We ask that you let the staff know if you see an animal, and where they are, while on site so we can give a heads up for other visitors.

Thank you for helping us protect the wildlife that call Serpent Mound home. By giving animals the space they need and observing them respectfully from a distance, you help ensure a safe and healthy environment for both wildlife and visitors. We appreciate your cooperation and stewardship.
