Juneteenth is a celebration marking the end of slavery. June 19th 1865 is the first time the Union Army enforced the Emancipation Proclamation which Lincoln issued in 1863 and which prohibited slavery in the rebelling states during the Civil War. While this did not completely end slavery in the United States and territories, it is a widely recognized date that symbolizes the freedom of slaves. Later that year in December, the 13th Amendment which abolished slavery in the United States was added to The Constitution.
