THIS WEEKEND IN NYC: will be at Porsena on February 9th with her incredible collection of knitwear. If you are in the area and want to a) feel what it is like to be wrapped in handmade love and comfort b) meet the incredible human who is responsible for every dream and every stitch that goes into these pieces and c) eat Italian food and dream of mediterranean skies, please pop your head in and say hello! It was one of the greatest gifts of 2019 for me to find a friend who lives in a creative world that so resonates with my own, and these photos are a small slice of the many projects we have been working on together. Go give Emily a big hug from me if you can, and swipe through for trunk show details 🎀 @ Porsena

The corner of my studio where tax records, computer cords and receipts mix with the books and objects that are inspiring me right now. I wanted to explain a little more about the print on the wall in this photo (see previous post for detail of the work). The oversized, soft white mat and simple chrome frame that encircle this landscape glimpse are a reverent nod to the Bauhaus architects who migrated to New England and forever changed the way we think about art, design and architecture. Most notably, the school's founder, Walter Gropius, fled Germany after the N**i party labeled the school 'degenerate' and a center for communist intellectualism, eventually resettling his family in Lincoln, Massachusetts (you can now tour his home, the Gropius House). He went on to teach at the Harvard Graduate School of Design, along with his protégé Marcel Breuer, and at MIT. The frame of this piece is an integral part of how I wish to present my image, so much so that I don't think I would ever share a print without it. Just as the architects of the Bauhaus framed the New England landscape in the windows of their homes, I wanted this photo to feel like the eyes waking up in a sparing space, where everything leads you to the view outside.⠀

I’ve been working on this series of landscape glimpses for a while now, endlessly reaching for a way to communicate how I feel when I look out at quiet places. A search for the eternal ‘Why❔’ crudely rendered in the crystalline structure of color film. To focus my camera on any one detail at times like these seems beside the point, so I choose not to focus on anything at all. I feel I can fall into this space each time I look at it, as though it is a trap door in a ceiling and it opens into the sky.⠀

Last weekend, one of the chefs at the wedding I was photographing insisted on taking a picture of me. I don’t think I’m the only wedding photographer out there who squirms at the thought of posing for a picture and firmly plants themselves behind the lens in all situations, but secretly wishes they had more good photos of themselves. Well, I don’t know how she did it, but she managed a double exposure on my old Pentax K1000, and took one of my most favorite portraits I’ve ever had. Here I am, hair a wild windswept nest as per usual by this point in a wedding day, loaded down with 3 cameras (she is using the 4th), feeling truly and lovingly seen.

Queen Anne's Lace, also known as Daucus carota, Bishop's lace and wild carrot.🌛⠀
This leggy, spindly roadside wildflower is one of my favorite things about summer, and certainly first in my heart as far as flowers go. (Maybe this is because I often feel like a leggy, spindly, awkward and out-of-place wildflower 🙈). Currently on my to do list, sandwiched between “pack for Paris” and “change oil on truck” is “go on a hike and gather Queen Anne’s Lace seeds.”
